Introducing: Umphrey’s McGee 15th Anniversary Tour Program

Nearly as old as rock and roll itself is the concert tour program. Before the internet age took hold, you would regularly find tour programs for sale at venue merch tables for artists from all genres and levels of success. It allows fans to find out more about the band they just saw in concert and gives them a keepsake to bring home with them. In recent years the tour program has become the domain of legacy acts and mainstream hitmakers…until now. Umphrey’s McGee will sell a 48-page 15th Anniversary Concert Program through their website and at the merch table for 2013 UM concerts.

An editorial team consisting of Umphrey’s organization members, myself and a few other valuable contributors have spent the last six months creating a kickass document worthy of the band’s first foray into tour programs. Among the treats inside are band biographies, a look at the touring vehicles of Umphrey’s McGee throughout the years, band member-penned lists, a page for each year of the band’s existence featuring photos, multiple pages of memorabilia shots, a crossword puzzle and much more. There’s something for everyone, from UM “virgins” attending their first show to hard-core Umphreaks. The program even includes a scorecard and lists of all Umphrey’s songs and covers to help you keep track of the setlist at a particular show.

For an example of a “Year Page,” check out the 2003 page…

  1. My favorite show has to be the BK Bowl this past month, where Umphrey’s McGee celebrated their first 15 years of facemelting. It was my 31st time seeing the band, and to celebrate something so special, in such a small room, was something I will never forget.

  2. My favorite show was the first one they played at Brooklyn bowl. Made a couple of great friends and really enjoyed that show. Met Joel before the show and was a great point of my Unphreys career

  3. Best show of the past 15 years:

    08/24/05 • Stone Pony • Asbury Park , NJ
Set 1: The Crooked One, Soul Food I > Jazz Odyssey > Slacker, Roulette, The Song Remains the Same, Atmosfarag > Der Bluten Kat
Set 2: Ocean Billy > Black Sabbath > War Pigs > Ocean Billy, KaBump > Jimmy Stewart1 > QBert1 > 2×2, In Violation of Yes, In the Kitchen, Pearl Necklace2 > Pay the Snucka3
    Encore: Bridgeless4

2with Shattered (The Rolling Stones), Runaway (Bon Jovi), and Right Now (Van Halen) teases
    3with Stairway to Heaven teases
4with Start Me Up (The Rolling Stones) intro jam

For anyone who was at the stone pony that night, dealing with that intense heat, know how fireeee this show was. I know Stasick remembers knocking on the ceiling gettin ready to knock the place down.

  4. The show that introduced me to the UM sound…only wish I could have been there!

  6. Favorite UM show is tough, but it may be 2005-05-06 at the Great American Music Hall. Great show, but even more so was that I was able to take a good friend of mine to his first show. 8 years later, he’s seen 150 odd shows to my 60ish and it’s through our love and obsession for UM that we’ve been able to stay close the past 5 years since we
    graduated from college

  7. My favorite UM show I attended was on Jam Cruise 10, on the Pool Deck. Musically it may or may not be the best show I’ve seen…I would have to do a lot of re-listening to decide. However, standing on the Pool Deck and looking up at the sky while they played Shine On You Crazy Diamond was an experience I will never forget.

36 shows in, and I keep liking them more and more. Here’s to another 15 years!

  8. I have to say the most memorable are definitely Sundays at summer camp… Sweltering, pour downs, tornado warnings… You name it. Standing shoulder to shoulder or sitting back to back with those just as dedicated are unforgettable. Fav shows are 9/3/04, 12/30/09, 9/28/10 first and only time in ABQ @ el rey was the best way to welcome me there. mm/ keep showing your versatility boys!!

  9. 07/15/03 • Mongollon Brewing Company • Flagstaff , AZ
    Set 1: Blue Echo > JS1 > Push the Pig > August2 > Padgett’s Profile > Phil’s Farm3, 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover

    Set 2: HBB4 > SFB > JS5 > SFB, The Haunt > OoO, Sweetness > WMM> Walletsworth > JO > Walletsworth

Encore: Hangover > Senor Mouse, Pay the Snucka6

1this Stewart becomes the basic theme for Robot World
    2unfinished
    3with Rappers Delight jam
    4with Star Wars cantina jam
5portion of this Stewart later becomes a section of Bridgeless
    6Part III

Although I didn’t see my first show until a year later I come back to this show frequently. It was the first year with Kris on drums and is very loose with regards to jams. An excellent song selection makes this a “must-hear” show.

  11. My favorite UM show is 12/31/07. It was my first actual NYE show after attending the opening night of the run for the prior two years. This was also UM’s 10 year anniversary celebration. 3 sets of amazing rock music blew my mind, and I had a few other great personal moments that night. I’ll never forget how much fun my crew and I had at the Aragon Ballroom then. Thank you Umphrey’s!

  12. My favorite show was Red Rocks 9/14/2012. Been able to re-live that glory with their awesome Blu-Ray. It was also my girlfriend’s first show and she has been obsessed with Pony ever since.

  13. Nearing my 40th birthday, who would have thought I could feel so good and giddy after a rock show. Fanboy for life!

04.03.2008 The Orange Peel, Asheville, NC, USA
Set 1: The Triple Wide > 13 Days, Tribute to the Spinal Shaft > Water, The Pequod > Mulche’s Odyssey

    [1] with Kula jam
[2] with Karl Engelmann on kazoo

  14. Has to be my first show…2010/07/30 at the Cape Cod Melody Tent. The place was about half full, with the stage in the center slowly rotating in circles. Waful lit that place up like a circus tent. The was not only the best UM show I’ve seen, to this day it is still the best show I have ever seen.

    1. 7-19-08
this show hooked me. I had seen them about 15 tines prior to this show, but had never seen a whole show that i loved from start to finish. the wappy is epic. the whole show is stellar. STS9 had opened and this was a 1 set show at charter one pavillion that was 95 mins of straight fire. love it

  15. My favorite show?

3/22/2007 – Orpheum Theatre, Madison, WI

Set 1: Intro > Great American, Pay the Snucka, Sociable Jimmy > Hajimemashite > Believe the Lie, War Pigs > Out Of Order

Set 2: Nothing Too Fancy > FF[1] > Waiting Room, Eat > The Crooked One > The Fuzz[2] -> The Crooked One > Eat > Nothing Too Fancy

    Encore: Higgins

[1] with The Fuzz tease and Can’t You Hear Me Knocking (The Rolling Stones) jam
    [2] “dub version”

Umphrey’s 2nd ever show at the Orpheum after playing the Barrymore for so long. This one featured the most consistently aggressive/progressive improv I still have ever seen from UM. The intro jam before Great American ended up being used as the final section of Wizard Burial Ground. Heavy way to start, and they never let up. Set 2 damn near brought the Orpheum to the ground, with The Crooked One > Fuzz > Crooked One segment being the centerpiece of a monstrous, rocking, improv heavy string of music.

Also, on a personal note, I had requested the Waiting Room cover to Joel weeks before the show and sort of forgot about it. So, when that familiar bassline popped up out of FF I was as ecstatic as a human can be.

Can’t wait to return to the Orpheum next weekend for some UM!

  23. Favorite show I attended is 3.29.01 at the Music Box in Omaha. I’ve only seen them 2 other times at Big Wu Family Reunions in 00 & 01, but the Omaha show stays fresh in my mind. Mostly due to their wonderful cover of All Night Long to end the 1st set.

  24. My favorite UM show was 1/20/12 at the Best Buy. Straight up rock and jamming from start to finish. Enjoyed the hell out of it.

  25. Great work on this Scott (and everyone else), cannot wait to get a copy! Like many others, my favourite show was also my first. After taking a much needed hiatus from the jamband scene (nearly 8 years), a friend of mine gifted me a couple tickets to 10.23.2008 here in Vancouver, BC. Needless to say, I was blown away. Thanks UM for all the music, happy 15!

  28. Favorite show has to be my first UM show. Waterstreet Music Hall, Rochester New York. The Song Remains The Same killed it!!!!

  29. My first show for many of reason. I was dragged to Iowa with my roomate in college to check this “sick band that will straight shred” as he said. On the way up he played me safety in numbers which I found to be very interesting and songs like Nemo were very catchy. Yes I know I was a Noob lol. Turned out to be an adventure thats still treking these days. Anyways ill never forget this trip with one of my best friends and going to see one of my fav bands. Good times for sure ready for the pageant this weekend

Purchase via UMLive: 09.23.2006, River Roots Live Music Festival, Davenport, IA

  30. Have to be my first show, 2003 in NOLA @ Tipitina’s. Had only heard of the band and was curious, and I was blown away by how tight they were. Been a fan since, and though I have seen and heard some great shows, have to go back to that one just for the sole reason that it was the one that hooked me!

  31. Favorite show has to be Detroit 2/2/13. Beside the set list being straight out of my absolute dream show, I got to be the uber fangirl and get backstage to meet and hang with Jake for a bit. Not to mention the posters being totally sick. I’m still grinning. 🙂

  32. 04/04/03 • Lincoln Theatre • Raleigh , NC

Set 1: The Triple Wide, Walletsworth, The Fussy Dutchman > Andy’s Last Beer, Last Man Swerving, Blue Echo > Phil’s Farm, In the Flesh

Set 2: Hurt Bird Bath > Jimmy Stewart, All in Time, Utopian Fir > Peter Gunn Theme > Every Breath You Take > Drums*, White Man’s Moccasins
    Encore: Power to Love

    Notes:
    *Jake, Andy, and Kris
    -Kris’s birthday

Jake on percussion…what?!?!? That was tight. It was a warm welcome in Raleigh for Kris, both because of his birthday but also because it was one of the first tours he had been on, and the first time in Raleigh for certain. It was the day-after-my-birthday show, so to party it up 2 nights in a row was a welcome act for me, too.

I like this show because it was a great combination of solid, tour-tested classics, covers, and all-out inspiring jams, including a Jimmy Stewart out of HBB. ‘In The Flesh’ and ‘Power To Love’ had ridiculous energy, and the ‘Utopian Fir > Peter Gunn Theme > Every Breath You Take > Drums’ segment was out of this world. Now I gotta find a copy of this show!

  33. One of those February 2-night stands at the Barrymore, probably in ’03. Memories of those days got a little hazy, but I do recall that Vic beer bong. For some reason, I recall that being a Disco Biscuits show.

  34. How can I pick one show!? Out of all the 76 times I have seen them play, each show is better than the last and not as good as the one before. They are all epic!
A memorable one for me was my 10th show. Second night at Rothbury misic festival!!! They were on fire!!!!!!!!!
I’m pregnant and my baby has already been to 10 shows!!!!!!

  35. Umphrey’s free show at the Lincoln Park Zoo April 22 2007, only went to the show because it was free and some friends were heading there, I didn’t know of Umphrey’s then but by the time the show was over, I knew who my new favorite band was!
