Bob Weir Storms Off Stage Mid-Song @ Sweetwater

Last night was the second of two The RatDog Quartet performances at Sweetwater Music Hall in Mill Valley, Calif. Before this new version of RatDog took the stage, which features Bob Weir, Jonathan Wilson, Robin Sylvester, Jay Lane and sometimes guest Jason Crosby, the evening started off with an acoustic performance by Jonathan Wilson followed by a Bob Weir acoustic set. Weir battled with a bunch of talkers throughout his set telling them “Hey, I’m not interrupting you am I?” He finally gave up during a cover of Bob Dylan’s A Hard Rain’s A Gonna Fall. Bobby left the stage in the middle of the song after issuing an evil glare and telling the crowd he’d be back with his electric band.

When Weir returned with his RatDog Quartet in tow, he told the crowd “It’s okay, we’re not going to try to do anything particularly delicate now,” before launching into Friend of the Devil. The RatDog Quartet set included the first RatDog version of Fire On The Mountain which was sung by Jonathan Wilson. Wilson also sang on a cover of Sing Me Back Home, another RatDog debut. Jason Crosby, who sat in with Weir during his acoustic set, guested with RatDog for the majority of the set.

Annoying talkers at shows are a problem at concerts across the country, but we figured an intimate show by a band that rarely plays which took place at a venue owned the performer would be immune to such obnoxiousness. Guess not. Bob Weir and RatDog will play two shows at the Peach Music Fest in August.

  1. Same problem when he opened the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester last fall. Too many talkers; you can hear him commenting to the crowd about it several times on the auds that circulate. It’s a growing problem in intimate venues.

  2. SHUT UP AND DANC!

    OR

D.T.T.M. (Don’t Talk To Me, I only want to GET DOWN)

    LASTLY

It’s impossible to talk incessantly and listen intently simultaneously!

  3. Bay Area crowds are some of the talkiest on Earth. There are plenty of chill folks around there of course but the crowds are always full of Headier Than Thou douches who’ve, like, been there and done that, man, and can’t be bothered to pay attention.

  4. Yeah, it’s rude and annoying, but be a pro and deal with it. I’ve seen much lesser names than Bob Weir declare victory over very very rude chatty NYC crowds armed only with an acoustic guitar, good songs and their wit.

PS If they had opened the set finishing Hard Rain’s Gonna Fall loud, electric and obnoxious, that would’ve been cool.

    1. in reference to the intellectual reply from Neddy.
Fuck you and your attitude the sez ‘your a pro deal with it’
I been to a couple hundred dead, weir and jerry shows. I have never been so embarrest while watching this video. Drunk people are obnoxious and have no place at a quit show. The performer is the reason you layed down the money. Show some respect and shut the Fuck up.

  5. Going to see The Grateful Dead was the best concert experience you could ask for. In all the years I was on tour I never once had to tell somebody to shut up so I could hear the music. These days people have no respect. While I have not had the privilege of seeing Bobby in an intimate setting like Sweetwater in many years, you can be sure that I would have been much less subtle than Bobby in telling these asshats to put a sock in it.

  6. Hey Bobby,
Maybe you should play some more upbeat and exciting tunes. People are going to talk if you bore them with a snooze fest. See you around brah, be good!

  7. I remember Robert Hunter had the same problem back in 1990 at a Chicago show. He had to actually interrupt the show and told the guy yelling “LSD!!!” that he’d like to give him his money back so he would leave. He offered the audience two choices — keep talking and he would play a long first set and that would be it, or quiet down and he would play two sets. During the second set you couldn’t hear any talking … only SSHing.

  8. LOL @ “particularly delicate”

get the F! over yourself you washed-up has-been. For one, it’s not your song. Two, I hate old farts that don’t matter anymore and are about to drop off the planet getting all uppity about outdated music. Yes Dylan was the man, we all know that. But Hard Rain is not a freaking Holy Artifact or something. In all honesty it was just one of 1,000s of slow acoustic poems about war from that time.

    1. Excuse me? What the fuck are you doing watching the video and commenting if you think Bob Weir is a “washed up has-been”? And what are you? A washed up never-was?

  9. With respect have to ask Jay up there if he saw the Dead in any year AFTER 1987. This sort of behavior totally infiltrated the Grateful Dead after that period. Kids fresh from the mall and a Metallica or Van Halen show, in brand new tie dyes consistently in mid jabber, maybe waiting for Touch of Grey or Truckin, not sure. I remember some teen girls in dyes in Richfield Ohio in the early nineties increduously asking “What is this?”, in that valley girl voice like something smelled bad, as the Dead launched into the quite rare and resurrected Same Thing

  10. Bob definetly deserves to be enjoyed. how the fuck can u be talking during an accoustic weir set. come to michigan bobby you’ll be shown mad respect

  11. 1. Why did Bobby drop Mark Karan? He couldn’t have just come up with a new band name for this project? Dumb name, dumb move to loose Mark.

    2. Bobby, you can’t handle a few loud voices in the crowd? Maybe they are just hard of hearing from attending hundreds of your over-amplified concerts. You’d think you could have just let one of your stage-hands know to let the waiter (in your own club) to handle the situation. To ruin it for everyone else really shows what a silver spoon full-of-yourself chump you’ve become.

  12. Wow throughout the entire performance of that song you can hear how the crowd is affecting him…

  13. Where were all you people chastising Bobby at when Neil Young was fucking THROWING WATER on people FOR TEXTING. Not even for talking. People love to pick on Bobby for g-d reason.

  14. I’m with him totally; inconsiderate usually drunken loud talkers ruin many if not most bar shows these days so I’m skipping those venues myself.

  15. Bobby must’ve been getting pointers from Kimock. also, sorry, but am I the only one still picturing Bobby alone on that carousel with the caption (“STFU”)?

  16. My biggest pet peeve is talkers at shows. Why pay for the ticket, just stay at home or go to a bar and talk with your buddies. You have to talk louder than the music to hear each other and in the process ruin the experience for the people enjoying the music. I don’t care who the performer is, STFU and DANCE.

  17. that was an incredibly boring performance of a great song but nothing worse than assholes talking during live music. had to go off on a bunch of soriety sluts at Festival 8 who literally had their backs to the stage talking during the acoustic set.

  18. Welcome to ME VALLEY. I have witnessed many a yuppster in the SWMH who can’t handle their booze and think they own the place. If you don’t behave, we are sending you to Terrapin Crossroads in your new BMW 7 series. Try not to offend established artists, especially those who live in your backyard.

    1. Your just as negative as the talkers with your “go to terrapin crossroads” bullshit….. Take your to cool for school bullshit and shuv it!!!!!!

  19. Dude, if you want to get drunk and talk to your buddies, go to the bar, or better yet stay home. What a bunch of self-indulent jackasses. Give me a break. Assholes.

  20. If someone wants to talk and have fun at an entertainment event, that’s cool…it’s their dime. It’s a concert buddy, turn up the volume to ensure everyone in the crowd has no trouble hearing and stop acting like a diva.

  21. I have been there and heard the rude talking. Yes, it”s a concert That means “Shut the fuck up!” The last time I was there I felt like saying those same words.People talk all through a soft song then when it is over they applaud and cheer as if they had actually been listening. Go to a bar ,Ass Holes

  22. This wouldn’t happen if the hells angels still did security. Maybe bobby should dig that number outta the rolladex . 😉

  23. Thank you, Bobby! It may be their dime, but it’s my money too and I want to hear the effin band. Can’t count how many times I a good show turns bad because people can’t keep their mouths shut.

@ Tommy: Really? Are you that big of a douche?

  24. Video removed? Did Bobby sick his lawyers on you? Times have indeed changed. Jerry would not approve of any of this.

  25. Bravo Bobby! If I was there, I would have schooled the wookies! “No talkin in church! You in my house!” ….It would have went something like that! What’s more interesting is that you gave them an El Paso! Waiting for ya back east; deep in off season. You have my full attention! ~love~

  26. Lol at “turn up the volume” It’s an acoustic show. Acoustic shows are quite and intimate, it’s a shame you can’t wrap your head around that. Go harvest some more potatoes.
