Coventry To Hampton: Trey Anastasio

Trey’s touring band was in constant flux going through no less than six lineup changes between their first gig in April of 2005 to their last at Langerado 2007. Trey also did a summer tour with Mike Gordon & the Benevento/Russo Duo (GRAB), played one gig with Oysterhead (Les Claypool & Stewart Copeland), one gig with a group dubbed Serialpod (Mike Gordon & Bill Kreutzmann), played solo acoustic, performed with a couple different orchestras and finally toured with Classic TAB which featured Tony Markellis, Russ Lawton and Ray Paczkowski. Trey almost toured the country in 2005 co-headlining with Ben Harper on what was to be called the Zooma Tour, but it was canceled due to poor ticket sales.

Albums:
Shine (2005)
Bar 17 (2006)
The Horseshoe Curve (2007) Archive Release
Original Boardwalk Style – Live Release (2007)

EP’s:
Live in Chicago
Live in New York City 12-31-95
18 Steps EP
Lucius Beebe

In addition, Trey also appeared on the solo records of both Page and Mike. Trey will also appear on Rich Pagano’s upcoming album.

In December of 2006, Trey was arrested in upstate New York and charged with DWI-drugs after both Heroin and Prescription Painkillers were found in his vehicle. Trey ultimately plead guilty and avoided jail time by entering a court-issued drug rehabilitation program.

Trey addressed his state of mind at the time of his arrest in some humorous comments to Rolling Stone on May 28, 2008:

“When Phish broke up, I made some comment about how I’m not gonna go around playing ‘You Enjoy Myself’ for the rest of my life,” Anastasio said with a laugh. “And it’s so funny because Fish and Mike and Page have been talking to each other a lot lately and now — it’s not that I can’t believe that I said that, but its symbolic of how much I lost my mind or how much I lost my bearings or something. Because at this point in time I would give my left nut to play that song five times in a row every day until I die. I certainly thought about that while I was in jail.”

I think I speak for everyone at Hidden Track when I say we wish Trey the absolute best and hope he does not lose his mind and/or his bearings again.

And finally, before I go, a note that while I have made every effort to make this piece as comprehensive as possible, I could still use your help. I know I am missing at least one Trey original and that’s Gloomy Sky. Did I miss a tour date or a sit-in appearance? 1. Awesome work DaveO. This mustve taken hours or days for that matter.

Good timing too. I just got my Hampton tickets!

  2. Is it just me, or is this whole phish thing extremely distracting right now?

Thank you HT for making me feel normal

  3. This is great stuff for all of us Phish nerds. Thanks.
I’m pretty sure Trey sat in w/ Panic at the first Vegoose

  4. Honestly, these updates are pure shite. You could have been marginally connected to this community for the past few years and known all of this information.

“The first major thing Trey did (after supposedly taking a Caribbean vacation directly after Coventry) was record his solo album Shine with producer Brendan O’Brien.”

Excellent research you did for the article there.

    Poor.

  5. Making my way through the playlist and forgot how much I enjoyed Goodbye Head. Hope that one makes the Phish rotation.

Love the Red Rocks video you used too. Great work all around, Dave!!!

  6. I just kind of skimmed, but Gelo no Montana with Herbie Hancock? Didn’t they win a Grammy for that track? I know they were at least nominated for it in ’06, I think. It’s a pretty cool song by the way.

  7. It’s all about “Gone.”

That’s quite the fresh take on “Love is Freedom,” I might also say.

Nice going with putting all of these playlists together, kind sir!

  8. Serial Pod also played the Pre-Christmas Jam on 12/16/05 at the Orange Peel. Warren Haynes, Ivan Neville and Jon Medeski also sat in with them that night on Goin’ Down Slow, Iko Iko and Sugaree.
