Phish Summer Tour 2010 Opener: Toyota Park in Chicago – Setlist and Recap

More than five months after ending 2009 on a high note in Miami, Phish returned to the stage tonight at Toyota Park in Chicago and seemed to pick up where they left off on New Year’s Eve. The show started at 7:42PM CDT with an unusually jammy choice for the slot – Down With Disease – and continued with one older song after another. In fact, the newest songs in the first set were off of 1994’s Hoist – released 16 years ago.

Early in the show, guitarist, and Flyers fan, Trey Anastasio congratulated the people of Chicago on the Blackhawks recent Stanley Cup victory. When the quartet returned for the second stanza they launched into the improv-heavy Light off last year’s Joy LP bringing the streak of old chestnuts to an end. The first extended jam of 2010 came during Ghost which took a few exploratory curves, as usual.

Most of the tunes performed at show number one were staples of the rotation last year with the exception of the ZZ Top cover Jesus Just Left Chicago, which was performed once in ’09. The debut of the night came in the form of Show of Life, a song co-written by Anastasio and Steve “Dude of Life” Pollak on the corner of 94th Street and Amsterdam on the Upper West Side of Manhattan using an iPhone.

Phish Summer Tour continues tomorrow night at the Blossom Music Center in Cuyahoga Falls, OH. Keep your eyes on YEMblog for audio, video and reviews from the tour opener and on @YEMblog for reports from Blossom.

  3. Great concert last night. Tons of energy, and they were SO tight, even on the first show of the tour. The Cavern-> Julius encore sealed it for me.

  4. What’s the deal with the sing along? Doesn’t the audience know we can to hear Phish, not them?

  5. WHAT!?!?!?! If people want to sing then let them sing. There are no “rules” for a Phish show. Cept one maybe, DANCE!

  6. Ya know what….i agree if people wanna sing let them. it really makes no difference to me. everyone is there to have a good time, so let people rock out. remind me to never sit next to you…because if one of my jams come on… you can bet your phish tail i’m singing…see you guys at Camden.
