The second set picked up right where the first set left off with Wilson turning on the ignition before the tour debuts of Meatstick and Saw It Again kicked the set into overdrive. Saw It Again, which like Mellow Mood hadn’t been played since It, tied for second place in our pre-tour poll of which songs people wanted to see the band take off the shelf. Clearly this band has been giving the fans what they want between playing the original rarities and debuting a boat load of covers.

This show wasn’t just about the bust outs, it also contained a number of exploratory jams. Piper raged in a few different directions while Ghost took a few sharp turns before landing on the Phish debut of Jumping Jack Flash by the Rolling Stones. The group has teased Jumping Jack Flash a few times and Mike Gordon’s high school band – the Tombstone Blues Band, covered the song, but Phish had never covered the whole tune before. After a raw and rough run through Jumping Jack Flash, a Trey solo led back into a reprise of Saw It Again complete with screeching lyrics. Nearly every song the quartet rocked towards the end of set two included references to Saw It Again including Contact, You Enjoy Myself and the Fire encore. The boys even worked a few Jumping Jack Flash teases into the YEM giving what seems to the be the set of the tour perfect symmetry.

Phish tour continues on Tuesday night in Canandaigua, NY.

  1. This show was absolutely redonkulated! It felt a lot longer, due to the epic bust-outs and old-school pics. Phish has renewed my faith! It was swampy hot at MPP…Trey snickered as he loosened up a button on his shirt.
