Phish @ Raleigh: Setlist and Recap

Last year Phish set a record for most songs performed in one year from their vast repertoire with 248. It looks like the quartet is gunning for 2009’s record as they continue to mine their catalog for new gems to play with at each stop on this tour for a total of 161 tunes thus far in 2010. Tonight’s show at the Time Warner Cable Music Pavilion in Raleigh, NC featured five tour debuts including two covers that hadn’t been performed since 1999.

This evening’s performance began with the first Llama of 2010. Once a staple of the repertoire, it has become a rarity since the band returned in Hampton last year. The quartet followed the opener with a quick cover of Ween’s Roses Are Free – another tour debut. After a long, jammed-out Kill Devil Falls, Phish dusted off their version of Time Loves a Hero by Little Feat for the first time since “The Comeback Show” on December 31, 2002 at Madison Square Garden before ending the opening set with more standard fare.

Set Two started innocently enough with Backwards Down The Number Line, Halley’s Comet, Light and Fluffhead, when the band made a sudden turn into the reggae-fied Mighty Diamonds cover Have Mercy – a tune they haven’t played since 1999. Bust outs from 1999 were suddenly in fashion as Phish followed Have Mercy by dropping a nasty take on Light Up or Leave Me Alone by Traffic for the first time since Big Cypress. Quite a one-two punch that left die-hard fans speechless. What’s left for the last three shows? We’ll find out starting tomorrow at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre in Charlotte, NC.
