Phish @ Charlotte: Setlist & Recap

With no new album to support and after a year of shows under their belts, Phish has been letting it all hang out on Summer Tour 2010. The craziness continued last night at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre in Charlotte, NC; where “Jukebox Tour 2” quickly became the “Summer of the Breakout.” The band followed Raleigh’s cover bust outs by performing an obscure original in Charlotte that hadn’t been played in 23 years – Mike Gordon’s Fuck Your Face, along with five other tour debuts.

You would think the number of tour debuts would decrease this far into the tour, but that’s not how Phish 3.0 does things. Within four songs of the first set they had already dusted off Buried Alive and Vultures. Mexican Cousin and The Wedge were also pulled off the shelf for last night’s first set. We all know it isn’t just about the songs they play and Charlotte’s opening stanza had a few meaty jams out of Back on the Train and Stash that made for a true all-around effort.

Set Two opened with an expansive Drowned that took a few improvisational turns before guitarist Trey Anastasio delivered the lick that kicks off 46 Days. Twenty Years Later followed leading to the tour debut of The Lizards – a gamehenge tune that was a staple in the ’90s but has been performed infrequently over the past 11 years. Carini brought the energy up before the biggest bust out in the band’s history. In a summer where the band has been delivering covers and originals the fanbase never thought they would ever hear, Phish upped the ante by delivering a tight, powerful version of The White Tape’s Fuck Your Face – 1,413 after its last known performance. The quartet had clearly practiced the Mike Gordon original as they absolutely nailed it. A funky 2001 and raging You Enjoy Myself, complete with a vocal jam that teased Proud Mary and Get Back, finished off the second set before the A Day In The Life encore brought the night to a close.

Phish finishes the tour with two shows in Alpharetta, GA starting tonight.
