Phish @ the Greek Theatre, Berkeley – Night One: Setlist and Recap

The second leg of Phish’s Summer Tour 2010 kicked off this evening at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley, CA – a venue the band hadn’t performed at since 1993. Possum, the song Phish has played more than any other since returning at Hampton last year, opened the first set and the quartet followed it up with two more staples of 3.0 – Wolfman’s Brother and Divided Sky.

The rest of the first set of the leg also relied heavily on some of the most played tunes in the repertoire. Throughout the opening set, the band sounded tight and flubbage was minimal. Run Like An Antelope, the first set closer, saw Trey Anastasio dig deep and deliver one blistering run of notes after another and was seemingly the highlight of the set.

Set Two started with a Down With Disease that contained the first large dose of full band improvisation of the run. Mike Gordon showed off his new bass effects while Anastasio toyed with his tone as well. At times the quartet connected well, but there were moments where they seemed lost before segueing into Free. Phish LD Chris Kuroda made the most of the scenery and painted the venue with swaths of light post-sunset. The second meaty jam of set two came during a late set Tweezer. While the band stuck pretty close to the script for this rockin’ Tweezer jam, they did take it out for a minute or two before slyly segueing into Fluffhead.

At the start of the encore Trey took to the mic and told the crowd about how crucial a role former FOH sound engineer Paul Languedoc played in the group’s career and had the audience cheer for the guitar maker/sound man as a thank you for a new guitar Paul built – with a “magical piece of wood” – and gave to Anastasio. With that, Phish launched into Loving Cup with its line about “play[ing] a bad guitar.” Phish returns to the Greek tomorrow night.

  1. Just moved to Berkeley last Sat. Thinking about crashing the lots and/or looking for cheap extras tomorrow night. What experiences have people had? Can you hear from up that hill?

  2. Trey tries to find a way to, but there’s nothing he can say to make it stop, stop stop stop stop stop stop stop stop stop stop stop stop stop STOP!

  3. I saw no extras and lots of people looking. One of the hardest 3.0 tickets I have seen. Not sure about the sound on the hill but lots of people where heading up there so I’m sure someone can comment.
