At its core, soul music that is actually good is music that dwells on heartbreak and pain yet translates to a sense of pleasure and redemption for the audience. This is something that is often lost in the “modern” soul music that infatuates so many hipsters today when they fall in love with bands who seemingly preach soulful songs but fail to deliver the emotional goods. For Nebraska band Josh Hoyer & Soul Colossal, the heartbreak and pain is a driving force that comes natural, and when it comes to real soul music, they absolutely deliver.
Josh Hoyer may be unassuming in physical appearance – he could be the guy in the cubicle next to you as much as he could be your friendly confidante working the local dive bar – but Hoyer possesses the innate talent and presence becoming of a true soul singer. His style is low and slow, as if he wants you to appreciate every subtle nuance offered up in each note, and he has no fear in betting that his stories of the struggles that come with love will resonate with you. Hoyer is a singer and bandleader on an endless search to craft the perfect soul ballad, which is the core mission of his upcoming album, Running From Love, produced by Ken Coomer (Wilco, Uncle Tupelo) and releasing on Silver Street Records April 8. It is an album loaded with deep soul cuts and thick, funky grooves.
If you want to see this artist in full swing, you need only watch his new video for the upcoming single “Parts of a Man”, which we are honored to premiere on Glide Magazine.
For Josh Hoyer, “Parts of a Man” is a song that hit close to home. Reflecting on the tune, Hoyer says, “This song is for my wife, Sarah. When we met, it was very turbulent time for me. Her love is what ultimately pulled me out of an extremely self-destructive existence. Her patience and faith allowed me the time to heal and know I wasn’t alone. Everyone deserves that kind of love, and I was lucky enough to find it.”
