VIDEO PREMIERE: Alberta Cross Share Two Different Versions Of Haunting Single “Beneath My Love”

When Petter Ericson Stakee, the principal songwriter and driving creative force behind Americana band Alberta Cross, began preparing for his Stripped Back acoustic tour, he felt like it would be a good idea to add a visual to the music. This came in the form of two different versions of “Beneath My Love”, the upcoming second single off the band’s acclaimed self-titled album (out now on Dine Alone Records). While both videos were coincidentally shot in industrial settings and used black and white or restrained palates, each video presents the song in a totally different light visually and musically.

The acoustic version was done by William MR Kaner (who filmed Jay Z and Beyonce’s “On The Run” and Beyonce’s “Lemonade”) as part of a two song acoustic session he invited Petter to do. Shot in black and white film in a bare and industrial setting, the song is stripped down to just the lyrics and simple acoustic guitar accompaniment. The power and emotion of the lyrics are the focus and the result feels very intimate. The intimate simplicity of the shoot may have been influenced by documentary filmmakers like Les Blank and DA Pennebaker, both figures that Kaner admires.

The other version is electrified and was shot in a warehouse in Red Hook, Brooklyn by still photographer Francesca Galliani making her directorial debut. Galliani took advantage of the stark and dramatic lighting, feeling like it was conducive to the mood of the music.

Today we are excited to present an exclusive sneak peek at both versions of Alberta Cross’s “Beneath My Love” right here on Glide Magazine.

Reflecting on the song, Petter Ericson Stakee says, “‘Beneath My Love’ is a bit different from the other tracks on the album with its more modern sounds and quirky string arrangements. Lyrically it has a lot of nuances and layers that made creating a video for it really interesting. You could take it in so many possible directions and I love what both Francesca and Will did with the song and how they interpreted it so differently. It’s also been a fun one to play on my Stripped Back tour I’m out on at the moment. Even though it’s a very rhythmic track with quite a bit of full band production on the record, it really seems to work very well when it’s bare to the bones with just me playing it with all my pedal effects and one man band things on this tour.”
