Head Into Summer With Our May Streaming Guide

Now that summer’s right around the corner, with longer days filled with sun and adventure, who’s to say you can’t spend some quality time streaming all-new content? From breakout films to all-new comedy specials, here’s a look at what’s new with this month’s streaming guide.

Sundance Now

Junebug

Before Amy Adams was a household name, she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in this 2005 comedy-drama about a newlywed (Embeth Davidtz) who travels to North Carolina in search of a self-taught artist, and meets her new husband’s family along the way. This study of culture-clash is highlighted by a musical score from indie rock staples Yo La Tengo.

Starz

American Gods

An adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s seminal 2001 novel about a gathering of old gods who are mounting a war against new gods birthed by American culture, including technology and celebrity. Though the series technically premiered at the end of April, new episodes will be made available as they are every Sunday evening through the end of the first season. You can read our recap of the first episode here.

Howard The Duck

Before he made a now-infamous cameo in 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy, Marvel Comics’ Howard The Duck was given his own movie back in 1986 — to little fanfare. However, in the years since, the film has become somewhat of a cult classic, if for no other reason than co-star Lea Thompson’s somewhat uncomfortable sexual encounter with a child in an anthropomorphic duck costume.

Netflix

Don’t Think Twice

Writer, director, and star Mike Birbiglia’s (Sleepwalk with Me) ode to improvisation follows a fictional troupe known as The Commune who are forced to reexamine their future when faced with both losing their longtime venue and one member making it to the big time. One of the absolute best films of 2016, Don’t Think Twice manages to be both hilarious and heartbreaking, while confronting the nature of what it really means to follow your dreams.

Hulu

Winter’s Bone

A dark, moody film noir set in the Ozarks, Winter’s Bone was the breakout role for Jennifer Lawrence, who plays Ree Dolly, a tough-as-nails teenager on the search for her drug-dealing father. The film was widely praised, as was Lawrence’s performance, which was lauded for her steely-eyed resilience in the face of adversity as she struggles against all odds to keep her family together.

Twin Peaks Revival

While it’s technically on Showtime (which you can add as part of your Hulu subscription), this long-anticipated revival of David Lynch & Mark Frost’s captivating early 1990s whodunit is finally hitting the small screen later this month.

Amazon

Moonlight

The now-infamous mixup at this year’s Academy Awards had unfortunately overshadowed the much-deserved win of writer/director Barry Jenkin’s coming-of-age tale. Presenting its main character over three distinct parts of his life, the film was nothing short of revolutionary, and received near-universal praise for shining the light on an all too common story that too few of us are familiar with.

HBO Now

Chris Gethard: Career Suicide

The highly underrated comedian and actor (he also has a part in Birbiglia’s Don’t Think Twice) examines his life — for better or worse — in his own HBO comedy special. With a scaled-down set and presented by comedy’s modern tastemaker Judd Apatow, Career Suicide could be what Gethard needs to put him on the map.
