LISTEN: Attics Offers Breezy Experimental Rock On “GOAT”

Understated and wispy with a solid groove underlying its stereo phasing vocals; Attics bring us a tune to pull you out of the dregs of winter and into breezier moods with their new single GOAT. The lyrics are a somber but hopeful tribute to loss, but also feel like the advice given or taken to those that are left behind. The floatiness of the acoustic guitar and synth sounds are held firmly by tight bold bass playing and layered drums. The dynamic shift between the sung verse and higher energy instrumentals moves the song along so swiftly that it feels almost too short.

“GOAT” started out as an instrumental track that was my first experiment collaborating with the other band members over Zoom during quarantine. It was hard to figure out the technology and recreate the experiences of being in the same room. Progress was slow as the instrumental went through a lot of revisions to try to get all the separately-recorded sounds to meld. At that point, GOAT was just a working title that I assumed would change once I added lyrics and vocals. But around that time, I got the news that a former roommate and close friend of mine from college passed away unexpectedly. I tried to channel my grief and love for him into the lyrics, which now eerily fit the premise of the working title as I tried to mourn one the greatest I’ve known,” says the band.
