A Memory of Music: January 2011

The first weeks of January also saw the 3rd Annual Export NOLA come to New York City’s Sullivan Hall, The Bitter End & Brooklyn Bowl. The industry event introduced a few of New Orleans’ up and coming artists to the Northeast including saxophonist Khris Royal, trumpeter Maurice Brown and the lovely Mia Borders. At Sullivan Hall, Mia Borders’ set included covers of Robert Johnson’s Crossroads and cuts from her latest album, Magnolia Blue, all while wearing a much talked about pink piggie hat.

One of the hidden musical surprises in New York City is Les Paul Mondays at the Iridium. This past month saw Mike Stern and Victor Wooten join the band as the dueling bass and guitar were only outdone by the solos on this fun and playful night.

Of course the show with the most buzz in New York City this past month was Lettuce’s Soul to Soul II benefit at Brooklyn Bowl.  Although the rumored “special guest” never arrived, fans were treated to sit-ins with Hall of Famer Dr. John, Saxophonist legend Maceo Parker, drummer Questlove and oft-contributor Nigel Hall.

And in closing we’d like to thank Allison Murphy, Rob Chapman, and Tim Hara for this month’s contributions.  We would also like to wish a Happy 73rd birthday to the lovely Etta James.  It’s been reported that Etta’s had some unfortunate health problems of late and we here at Hidden Track would like to give our best to a living legend.

  1. You forgot to mention our favorite act at Export Nola, Honey Island Swamp Band. Those guys were killer! Definitely the best of the up & coming New Orleans bands.
