Friday Mix Tape: The King Must Die

It was the Summer of 1991 and I was a 14-year-old who had been exposed to plenty of alt-rock, but wasn’t as familiar with classic rock acts from the ’60s and ’70s. That all changed with a mix tape called “The King Must Die,” which my camp counselor rocked nearly every night. The King Must Die featured a slew of classic rock nuggets as well as a few songs that didn’t fit the bill, but we’re still amazing compositions. I loved that tape and when I got home I made sure to study up on the artists included within it.

For today’s Friday Mix Tape, I wanted to share six songs from that killer compilation. Many of these tunes are considered “played out” by some, but I get transported back to that magical summer at Camp Westmont every time I hear them. We start with a live version of Closer To The Heart by Canadian power trio Rush and continue with The Rolling Stones’ Angie. Next up is a country music classic, That’s My Job by Conway Twitty, followed by Behind Blue Eyes by The Who. Steely Dan offers Rikki Don’t Lose That Number and we finish with one of the greatest songs ever written, The Weight. I sure wish I still had that tape.
