Allman Brothers Band @ Beacon – Night Two

Fun covers, guests galore and extended jams – you know what that means…The Allman Brothers Band March Madness run at the Beacon Theatre in NYC is in full effect. Show number two featured a nice mix of classic originals and new material while eschewing the material from the landmark At Fillmore East album that was recorded 40 years ago today that will most likely be performed in its entirety tonight.

Last night’s show kicked off with Don’t Want You No More > It’s Not My Cross to Bear, just like the group’s first-ever Beacon appearance on September 27, 1989. Ain’t Wastin’ Time No More came next followed by the Allman Brothers Band debut of River’s Gonna Rise off of Warren Haynes’ forthcoming soul album, Man In Motion. Sax man Randall Bramlett was the run’s first guest as he joined the ABB for Desdemona. Gregg’s son, Devon, came out next to add one more guitar to the blues classic Key To The Highway. For the set closer, guitarist Jimmy Vivino, the leader of Conan O’Brien’s Basic Cable Band,  tore up Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad.

One of the bigger surprises of the 2007 March Madness run at the Beacon came when bassist Oteil Burbridge strode to the mic to lead the Allmans through a cover of Jimi Hendrix’s Manic Depression. Performed three times that run and twice since, Manic Depression made its first appearance in an Allman Brothers Band setlist since October 4, 2008 last night and featured a blistering guitar duel between Haynes and Derek Trucks. Bramlett came back out for The Same Thing before a lengthy Black Hearted Woman gave each member of the band time to shine. Jessica closed off the second stanza and last night’s encore was Son House’s Preachin’ Blues and our first repeat of the run – One Way Out.

The Allman Brothers Band return to the Beacon tonight to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the recording of the legendary At Fillmore East album. For those who can’t make it to the Big Apple, you can stream the entire show as it happens with a Moogis subscription.

  1. Looks like they’re getting into the groove…gotta love this time of year in the Big Apple! I heard from a few sources that David Hidalgo was supposed to sit in last night during the second set. Anyone have any info?
