God Street Wednesdays: A Gala Affair

Last Friday night, God Street Wine guitarists Lo Faber and Aaron Maxwell took part in a gala concert at Sullivan Hall in NYC to celebrate longtime fan Alexandra Rosenstein’s birthday. Not only did the pair play a lengthy acoustic set chock full of GSW classics, but Faber also sat in with NYC soul/rock band Leroy Justice on blistering renditions of Dreams by the Allmans and You Can’t Always Get What You Want by the Rolling Stones.

Most of the God Street tunes Lo and Aaron performed worked perfectly in stripped down arrangements with Thirsty, Borderline, Nightingale and Mile By Mile sticking out as highlights. Goodnight Gretchen was a bit of a clunker with both musicians starting different verses at the beginning of the tune. A great move by the pair was changing the key and style of When She Go for an acoustic rendition. While the tune still retained some of its reggae-tinged bite, the new arrangement was more country flavored and added new life to the song.

One surprise in an evening full of them came in the form of a couple of Wizard of Oz covers – If I Only Had a Brain and Somewhere Over The Rainbow – with Faber explaining that his daughter was a huge fan of the film leading him to play these songs for her. Another surprise was RatDog’s Kenny Brooks adding sax to a bluesy cover of Jesse Mae Robinson’s Sneakin’ Around. For the finale of their set, Lo and Aaron were joined by Jaik Miller and Leroy Justice for a fun, singalong version of Hey Jude by The Beatles.

Lo and Aaron’s participation was just part of what made Friday’s concert so special. Guitarist Jaik Miller put passion and verve into his songs during a brief set and Leroy Justice mixed guests and covers with their sublime originals during a headlining set. moe.’s Al Schnier lent his talents to Don’t Do It, while Schnier and Brooks both sat in on a funked up cover of Miss You.  Look for soundboard recordings from this show to surface soon. Faber and Maxwell next perform at Mexicali Live in Teaneck, NJ on November 5.
