Grateful Dead Road Trip Vol. 3 No. 2

We’ve been waiting for word on what show(s) would make up the next Grateful Dead Road Trips archival release and we finally found out this weekend. As part of last Saturday’s KPFA Grateful Dead Marathon, host David Gans played an outstanding Dark Star > El Paso from Austin, TX on November 15, 1971 which is part of the soon-to-be-released Road Trips Vol. 3, No. 2. The complete sequence goes back into Dark Star, but Gans kept us wanting more by ending the segment he played with El Paso.

We’re big fans of the five-piece version of the Dead from this period as Phil, Jer, Bobby and Billy were all at the top of their game during Fall Tour 1971 with new keyboardist Keith Godchaux performing admirably well for having just joined the band. Besides the first set Dark Star > El Paso > Dark Star, other highlights from 11/15/71 include a fiery Not Fade Away > Goin’ Down The Road Feelin’ Bad > Not Fade Away, early versions of Jack Straw and Ramble On Rose plus a blazing Cumberland and a rare You Win Again.

The recordings of this show that will soon be pulled from the Live Music Archive are far from perfect, so we look forward to hearing Jeffrey Norman’s mix. No word yet on a release date, but we expect the Dead Org to announce details any day now. Are you familiar with this classic Dead show?

  1. The bonus disc will be 11.14.71, Set II. An excellent Truckin’ > Other One suite, which is a precursor to the wonderful versions from Euro ’72 (ie. 4.7.72)
The NFA>GDTRFB>NFA from 11.15.71 is also spectacular – some extremely unique and intense jams happening on this one – rivals the best versions of that era (10.31, 11.7). Look for that show stopper to be held in high regard as a ‘best ever’ upon release. Enjoy!
