Phish @ SPAC, Night Two: Setlist and Recap

Phish celebrated Father’s Day this evening with their followers at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, AKA SPAC, in Saratoga Springs, NY. The show opened with Brother and during the middle of the song a bathtub was placed in the middle of the stage. Each band member’s children filled the tub just as they did last year on Father’s Day at Alpine Valley in East Troy, WI.

The first set also featured a guest appearance from longtime Saratoga Springs resident Tony Markellis on Gotta Jibboo – a song he co-wrote with Classic TAB band mates Trey Anastasio and Russ Lawton. Markellis sat in on bass for Jibboo shifting Mike Gordon to rhythm guitar duty, allowing Mike and Trey to play six strings together for the first time on a Phish stage. Besides Brother; Cities, Undermind, Roggae, Back On The Train and Sleep Again were all tour debuts in the opening stanza.

In what is becoming a Father’s Day tradition (see 6/21/09), the show-opening Brother featured the band members’ children jumping into a bathtub on stage, followed by Trey introducing each of them and wishing everyone a Happy Father’s Day. Gotta Jibboo featured Tony Markellis on bass and Mike on a second guitar. The end of Wilson contained a Dixie tease from Trey. In place of a traditional Makisupa keyword, Trey improvised lines that set up solos for Mike, then Fish, then Page. The subsequent Piper intro included repeated phrases from the Makisupa (“Mike,” “Policeman” “SPAC” and “House” among others).

Set Two wasn’t without its tour debuts, as Carini, The Mango Song, Swept Away > Steep and Makisupa saw their first action of Summer Tour 2010. Makisupa contained a nice dubby outro that continued into the beginning of Piper. Carini, Drowned and Piper all featured heavy doses of improvisation, making this monster of a set an all-around winner.

For the encore, the quartet covered Edgar Winter’s Frankenstein with Page sporting the keytar he bought from the James Brown estate. Phish returns to the stage on Tuesday night at whatever they are calling Great Woods these days in Mansfield, MA.
