21 year-old guitarist Derek Trucks continues to be a musical force to be reckoned with. Trucks was officially made a member of The Allman Brothers Band last summer and in between playing Red Rocks earlier this month and picking up the second leg of ABB tour now, Derek snuck in a few gigs with his solo band.

I have gone with the latter. What we have here is audio from four different sets at this past weekend’s Mountain Jam all of which feature Haynes on every track. Next week we will return to our regularly scheduled programming, this week – it’s all about Warren.

This band has two sets of brothers: Derek & Duane Trucks and Oteil and Kofi Burbridge. Add Nigel Hall and Susan Tedeschi and it’s a pretty ridiculous lineup. Warren joined the band for the Delaney & Bonnie classic Coming Home. The Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi band next play July 2nd at the Cape Cod Melody Tent.

If you have never seen Derek Trucks live, then you have no clue what is about to hit you. All innocent of face and with such a laid back stage persona that he would be invisible if it wasn’t for the spotlight beaming down upon him, Derek was sweating out a batch of new souled-out blues that kept you out of your seat and on your feet swaying for the entire set.
In our never ending quest to keep you up to date on the latest and greatest festival news comes the announcement of the initial lineup for Warren Haynes’ Mountain Jam.
This year at Hidden Track, we concocted a little experiment for our year-end Best Albums of 2009 list. Instead of picking the old fashioned way – subjectively – we opted for something a little different: a collaborative, collective list that incorporates the opinions of everybody here at HT.
To begin, we devised an all-encompassing list of around 100 nominees and populated it in a Google spreadsheet – essentially anything that anybody who writes for Hidden Track liked at all, made the list. Then we invited our crew of writers to independently vote on the whole list (omitting anything unfamiliar) on a scale of 1 to 20 (20 = five stars). We ended up with 33 voters with varying degrees of familiarity with the nominees; some folks voted on just about everything, while some just a few. From there, we eliminated anything that did not receive at least three votes, calculated the average scores, and sorted it. We took the top 25 scores and presto: the Hidden Track 25 Best Albums of 2009. No bullshit, no big opinions; just the results.

Skinny: In 2008 M. Ward seemed to take a backseat to doe-eyed actress Zooey Deschanel as the Him in vintage indie-pop act She & Him, but he was back in 2009 with his latest solo release, Hold Time. The album is full of everything we’ve come to expect from Matt over the years – modern indie-rock that is completely bathed in the patina of the last fifty-plus years of pop music. Combining his sepia-drenched vocals and open tuning guitar work with guest appearances from the aforementioned Deschanel, Lucinda Williams and Grandaddy’s Jason Lytle.

Artist & Title: Derek Trucks Band – Young Funk

The Derek Trucks Band put on a special show down in Atlanta, welcoming a slew of guests to the stage, including: Susan Tedeschi, Jeff Sipe, and Col. Bruce Hampton amongst others. This track, which comes off DTB’s 1998 album Out Of The Madness, features Jimmy Herring on additional guitar. The Trucks/Herring combination is one for the ages, I’ve seen these two go at it in Phil Lesh & Friends as well as the Allman Brothers Band. Derek and the band play tomorrow night at Skirball Center For The Performing Arts.

Sweet Virginia is the sixth track off the 1972 Rolling Stones Album Exile On Main St. On the studio cut, Mick Jagger is backed by Keith Richards, Clydie King, Vanetta Fields, Dr. John, Shirley Goodman and Tammi Lynn on vocals. Thanks to Keno’s Rolling Stones Website for all that info.
Allow me to quote a bit of James Hector’s, The Complete Guide to the Music of the Rolling Stones…
The nearest the Stones ever got to a round-the-campfire song, through Baden-Powell probably wouldn’t have appreciate the refrain. “Got to scrape the shit right off your shoes” suggested that the song may have been an obscure slant on the old standard ‘Walking Blues’, but the blues (& the reds & the greens, for that matter) referred to the song were in tablet form. If one Stones’ song was written by Keith and Gram Parsons up in the Blue Ridge Mountains, ‘Sweet Virginia’ must have been it.

Camper Van Beethoven: Leading off this week we’ve got this cover from Camper Van Beethoven during their first incarnation as a band. Camper Van Beethoven disappeared for the majority of the 1990’s only to reappear in 1999 and have been touring and recording sporadically ever since. Source: 11-12-1989

Will It Go Round In Circles first appeared on the 1972 Billy Preston album Music Is My Life. The track would then be issued as a single the following year and eventually hit #1 on the Billboard Top Singles chart.

Band From TV: Band From TV makes their second Cover Wars appearance this week, they previously were featured in the You Can’t Always Get What You Want edition back in July. Loving You Is Sweeter Than Ever was released as a single and also appeared on The Four Tops 1966 album On Top. Though he’s never recorded a version of the song, Stevie Wonder gets the songwriting credit for this legendary Motown gem. The composition was a joint effort between Wonder and Ivy Jo Hunter, whose songwriting credits also include another smash hit – Dancing In The Street.
The Contestants:
The Band: It’s gotta be confidence-building for a lead singer tackling this song, in this case Rick Danko, knowing you’ve got a voice like that of Levon Helm to back you up. While poking around looking for information on these covers, I found a great interview that Peter Stone Brown did with Rick Danko in 1977. When asked why Loving You Is Sweeter Than Ever was never on an official release from The Band, Danko answers that he thought it was on Rock Of Ages. It’s interesting just how little artists can sometimes know about their own releases. The track would make it to the Deluxe Edition release in 2001. Source: Rock Of Ages (Deluxe Edition)
