Neko Case: The Pageant, St. Louis 9/24/08

“I’m so tired, I wish I was the moon tonight,” Neko Case sang midway through her breathtaking set at The Pageant in St. Louis. We’ve come to expect the best from Case over the years, and that’s what she continues to deliver in her live performances and albums. 2006’s Fox Confessor Brings the Flood showed off Case’s talents as not only a singer and songwriter, but also a capable producer of creating her own vision and bringing it to life.

The Sadies: The Good Brothers Remember (INTERVIEW)

The Sadies are one of today’s hardest working bands, having put out five albums since signing with Yep Roc Records four years ago (including the new release New Seasons), worked in various formats with alt country/indie crooner darling Neko Case. The Sadies are fronted by the Good brothers (Dallas and Travis) and have been making a name for themselves since growing up around their father’s (and uncles’) band, Canadian country Hall of Fame legends, The Good Brothers.

Longevity is the key to a good song or still liking a song after the hundredth listen. 2007 already looks bright with anticipated releases from the Shins, Bloc Party, and LCD Soundsystem in the first quarter alone. The following list encapsulates the songs that kept us rocking throughout another arduous year.

The Glide 20 From 2006: The Year’s Best Albums

On the surface, with iPods selling in the millions, downloads becoming more and more accessible, and even the actual coining of the moniker, 'The MySpace Generation,' 2006 may appear to be a relatively quiet year for the album. But taken as a whole, it was actually another solid year for LP releases. Sure, there were less blockbusters and a few too many prematurely hyped 'next best thing' mp3s, but when we sat down to go over the piles of CDs, there were more than enough quality titles that had to be reluctantly voted off the island. What we ended up with was a list that offered a little bit of everything – a blurring of genres and styles, featuring artists who created definitive statements – easily identifiable as 2006, but timeless all the same.

Neko Case : Live From Austin, Texas

Recorded on August 9, 2003, Neko Case’s appearance on Austin City Limits is obviously a bit late to hit the stores. It only features one song (“Maybe Sparrow) off her latest album, Fox Confessor Brings the Flood, instead concentrating on covers and material from Case’s older albums, all of which are performed with the usual cast of characters that she has taken on the road the past few years.
