Allen Out For Biscuits’ T5 Run: Sammy, Greenfield, Deitch and Shearer In

Depending on how the next three nights go, 2010 may be known as the year the Disco Biscuits got by with a little help from their friends. Nine months after Chris Michetti and Tommy Hamilton came to the band’s rescue when current guitarist Jon “The Barber” Gutwillig broke his wrist, former drummer Dr. Sam Altman and three of the top drummers in the scene will sub for Allen Aucoin, who suffered a severe asthma attack yesterday, at the Biscuits’ Terminal 5 shows on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

When Allen Met Sammy

Lotus drummer Mike Greenfield will be behind the kit tomorrow night, Adam Deitch of Break Science and Pretty Lights and The New Deal’s Darren Shearer will share drumming duties on Tuesday, while original Disco Biscuits drummer Dr. Sam Altman will return to his former seat on Wednesday night. Allen’s doctors have cleared him to perform on December 30th and 31st at the Tower Theater. READ ON on for the statement from tDB’s website…

Preview: Free Summer Concerts In NYC

The summer concert season is upon us and the Hidden Track staff know that it’s virtually impossible for us to afford every show we want to hit, and still be able to pay our insanely expensive New York City rents. Luckily for us, there are a plethora of fantastic free concerts throughout the summer that don’t cost a dime. We decided to weed through all the listings and present to you our 3rd Annual NYC Free Summer Concert Picks. Let’s take a look…

HT Recommends: She & Him / Oakley Hall

Where: The Beach @ Governors Island

When: Sunday, July 4, Beach Opens At 10 AM, Show 4 PM

Official Info: She & Him make music for an eternal springtime, when the temperature is warm enough to go riding with the top (or at least the windows) rolled down and the radio turned up. They occupy an alternate universe where the saddest of songs feel as warm as sun showers; the rain may be coming down, but somewhere nearby, everything looks bright. What began as a fascinating, no-strings attached collaboration on 2008’s Volume One has evolved into a bona fide, touring band, and She & Him are here to stay. Zooey Deschanel and Matt Ward are as comfortable and complementary a musical pair as Les Paul and Mary Ford; hearing them again on Volume Two feels like getting together with two old friends. This time, the harmonies have grown more angelically layered, the string arrangements more dramatic, the songwriting even sharper and more confident. But, as with Volume One, the prevailing mood is bittersweet, dreamy, and romantic.

Other Free Shows At Governors Island: 6/5 – Yeasayer, 7/3 – Portugal. The Man / Alberta Cross, 7/10 – Lucero, 7/16 – Caribou / Phantogram / The Chain Gang of 1974, 8/8 – Josh Ritter & The Royal City Band / Justin Townes Earle / Dawn Landes & The Hounds, 8/14 – Neon Indian, 8/15 – Dr. Dog / Cheif

GSW Has Been Brought Back: God Street Wine @ Gramercy Theatre – July 9 & 10

Today is the day God Street Wine fans have been waiting for since the band played their “final shows” as a touring unit at The Wetlands in December ’99. The original members of GSW have announced that they will reform for a two-night stand at the Gramercy Theatre in their hometown of New York City on July 9 & 10. Tickets for the shows go on sale to the general public this Friday with a special pre-sale for Winos starting at 10AM on Wednesday and running until 10PM on Thursday if tickets remain.

We started God Street Wednesdays, our weekly look at the band’s music, back in January of 2009 and the reception these columns have received made it clear that no one has forgotten about God Street Wine. Over the past 14 months, we’ve heard from many Winos, members of the band and members of the group’s crew. The first friendship we struck up was with former GSW stage manager, lighting director and close friend Michael Weiss, who had a major role in putting these shows together.

Michael, who was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, a chronic degenerative disease of the central nervous system, in 2004, asked the band to come together to raise awareness and funds for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. As such, both shows will be benefits for NMSS, part of GSW’s incredibly generous plan to no longer be a profit-making entity. We’ll hear more from Michael later, as we’ll be dedicating all of our posts to God Street Wine today in celebration of this momentous occasion for Winos. Does GSW have plans to play more shows? Stay tuned for our interview with drummer Tom “Tomo” Osander this afternoon for his answer to that question. READ ON for a timeline of the events leading up to today’s announcement…
