Last Week’s Sauce: March 15th – 21st

The Disco Biscuits have had quite a week, but they made it through and Jon “The Barber” Gutwillig is at home resting up after successful surgery on his wrist. In addition to some music from Barber’s fill-ins, we’ve also got audio from Fareed Haque’s great world music ensemble, a John Mayer/Michael Franti collaboration, some recent goods from Perpetual Groove and a fantastic classic rock cover from the Ryan Montbleau Band.

Another week and another edition of the Last Week’s Sauce Podcast. If you want to take this week’s five selections with you, you now can.

Artist & Title: the Disco Biscuits – Park Avenue
Date & Venue: 2010-03-19 House of Blues, Boston MA
Taper & Show Download: Matt Quinn

Before things went horribly wrong at the House of Blues last Friday, there was some fantastic music being made despite difficult circumstances. From the moment Chris Michetti took the stage for Park Avenue, I knew the Disco Biscuits had a good game-plan on how to attack that night’s show. tDB’s set at the Ultra Music Festival and their late night Tractorbeam set will go on as scheduled tomorrow with the help of Michetti and Tom Hamilton.

Last Week’s Sauce: February 1st – 7th

We have a lot of good audio and video to throw at you from last week, Furthur is back on the road for a major tour and Trey Anastasio is out on the road solo for the first time in over a year. Also Umphrey’s McGee seems to have worked their way into three different bands entries this week. Check out what’s below to see which band had a member sit-in with UM and which one took a veiled jab at either the band or the fans, or possibly neither.

Artist & Title: Furthur – It Must Have Been The Roses
Date & Venue: 2010-02-06 Hard Rock Live, Orlando FL
Taper & Show Download: marcus

Somewhat quietly, Zoe Ellis and Sunshine Garcia have been added to Furthur to help out in the vocals department. This rendition of this great slow Jerry tune sounds fantastic and most certainly benefits from their addition. Furthur plays tonight at Bojangles Coliseum in Charlotte.

Cover Wars: Helpless Edition

Helpless was written by Neil Young and released on the 1970 Crosby Stills Nash & Young album Deja Vu. There are three definitive performances by Young of this tune – the studio recording, Young’s performance with The Band that is captured in both audio and video formats at The Last Waltz where drugs were involved and the third is from MTV’s Unplugged.

Cover Wars

We’ve got a lot of renditions this week, more than I normally allow, but when it was time to cut some, I thought they were all pretty damn good.

The Contestants:

Buffy Sainte-Marie: This cover was recorded just a year after the original release of CSNY’s version of Helpless. In fact, Neil Young plays on this album but I have been unable to determine if he plays on this track. For those of you listening on headphones, crazy reverb/delay on the snare drum in the intro to this song. I’m not sure if this is intentional as it disappears once the vocals kick in. Intermezzo: Work For a Free ACL Ticket

Tickets for this year’s Austin City Limits Festival sold out weeks ago, but those willing to work can exchange three five-hour shifts & a $15 application fee for a weekend pass to the event. Visit workexchangeteam.com for more details and to apply for the ACL and/or Festival 8 teams.

In other ACL news, the schedule for the festival – which takes place in Austin’s Zilker Park on October 2 – 4 – has just been released.

Let’s take a look at some other stories we’ve missed this week…

  • Paul McCartney will put out a live album on November 15

This album will be a “live summary” of the concerts given by the ex-Beatle in July, while he played for the very first time at the Citi Field Stadium in New-York City for three memorable nights, on July 17th,18th and 21st 2009.

This CD album is likely to be sold in a box set containing not only a live album but also the DVD of the concert. [via maccablog]

  • Celebrate Brock Butler’s 30th birthday by buying his new EP

Pedro Loopez is a short collection of tracks assembled by Brock, reminiscent of his previous release “Instrumentals & Incidentals,” this collection is a bit more natural sounding with less midi and more cowbell. The original track files will be offered up as well during the coming weeks so Brock’s fans can assemble their own creations to listen to. Look for an announcement about that soon. [via TheRevButler]

  • Benjy Eisen talks to Roseanne Cash about singing with Tweedy

“I know Jeff just a little bit,” Cash tells Spinner. “I’ve met him a few times and I’m a huge fan of not only Wilco but Golden Smog and all the rest of it, and it was just a great honor for him to do this.”

Tweedy duets with Cash on ‘Long Black Veil,’ a country standard originally performed by Lefty Frizzell and composed by Danny Dill and Marijohn Wilkin. [via Spinner]

Finally, anyone who thought guitarist John Kadlecik’s successful stint with Bobby and Phil as part of last weekend’s Furthur shows would take away from Dark Star Orchestra’s never-ending touring schedule needs to think again. The DSO are playing a full slate of shows starting tomorrow night in Seattle and running through the just announced New Year’s Eve show at Ram’s Head Live in Baltimore. READ ON for more details…

CW: This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody)

This week we’ve got arguably the first love song that The Talking Heads ever recorded. This track was originally released on the 1983 album Speaking In Tongues. Click here to view the video of this song from Stop Making Sense.

Cover Wars

Did you know that the studio recording of this tune had members of the band not playing their primary instruments? It was: Jerry Harrison (bass), Tina Weymouth (guitar), and David Byrne (keyboards).

The Contestants:

The Arcade Fire: Arcade Fire have the advantage of being the only band this week that has performed this song with David Byrne. That performance from New York City, was released on vinyl as the B-Side to the Neighborhood #3 (Power Out) single promoting the band’s 2004 album Funeral. Source: Neighborhood #3 Vinyl Single

Bust Outs: Caps and Nuts Edition

Ever since Al Gore invented rap in the ’70s, this relatively new breed of music has set the standard for cool. There’s simply no denying a good gangsta rap phase during your youth involving St. Ides, repeated viewings of Boyz in the Hood and Menace 2 Society and of course blasting bass out of your badass 1985 Mazda 626 (ok, that one was just me). With that in mind, today’s Bust Outs is dedicated to great gangsta rap covers by some of our favorite jambands as they channel their inner G and crank out some noble jams courtesy of Dre, Snoop, Warren G, Nate Dogg, Nelly, and Will Smith.

Perpetual Groove, Macumba – 12/31/08

In the midst of a 21 minute Macumba, PGroove’s catchy Penguin-themed favorite, the band goes AWOL into a stellar rap medley in front of an almost hometown New Years show in Athens, GA. Covering a marathon arsenal including Pass the Mic (Beastie Boys), Let Yourself Go (Big Daddy Kane), California (Athens) Love (2Pac), 99 Problems (Jay Z), Lollipop (Lil Wayne), Whatever You Like (TI), Gin and Juice (Snoop) and lots more, Brock Butler and Perpetual Groove gave fans a real New Years treat as they basically covered the past 20 years of rap in one medley.

Review: Perpetual Groove @ The Variety

While making our way to the Variety Playhouse to bear witness to Perpetual Groove’s sold-out show in Atlanta last Saturday evening, I was struck by the flurry of activity taking place outside the venue. Drum circles, blown glass vendors and teens from area high schools greeted us as we approached the front door. It had been a few years since I last caught the band and was honestly unaware how much their fanbase had grown.

[All Photos by Megan Case]

Located roughly 70 miles from the band’s homebase in Athens, Saturday’s show was somewhat of a homecoming. Taking the stage just after 9 p.m. and showering each other at center stage with talcum powder, the band manned their respective positions and we settled in for three-hour-plus show.
