Photos: Grateful Dead Europe ’72 Box Set

Back on January 19, Rolling Stone broke the news that Rhino Records would be putting out every note the Grateful Dead played on their landmark tour of Europe in 1972 as part of a limited-edition box set. The limited-edition set sold out quicker than anyone imagine and now, a mere seven months later, these Europe ’72 box sets have started arriving.

All in all, Europe ’72 wound up as 22 digi-packs featuring three or four discs for most shows giving purchasers a grand total of 73 discs worth of music. The digi-packs and two accompanying books are all included in a replica steamer trunk with a latch and a handle. Early reviews of the remastered music are glowing with most complaints focusing on the flimsy cardboard sleeves that protect the discs themselves.

Chicago Eats: Sausages and The Purple Pig

Chicago, Chicago that toddlin’ town.

Frank Sinatra certainly sang it straight up about The Windy City.

Words cannot express how thrilled Chris and I were when our favorite band Phish announced they were playing three nights at the famous UIC Pavilion in Chicago, Illinois, this year. We have friends in Chicago that we don’t see nearly enough and the prospect of Chicago eats for a week had us salivating. We had many fun culinary experiences during our stay, but three restaurants topped the pack. I will tell you about our adventures in eating at Hot Doug’s and The Purple Pig this week. Stay tuned for next week’s article about our fantastic meal at Girl and the Goat.

HOT DOUG’S

While planning for the Phish run, one theme came up repeatedly: SAUSAGE! Chicago is well known for its tubular meat—whether it be in the form of the famed Chicago hot dog, Polish sausages or the more creative gourmet sausage sandwiches—and we were determined to try them all. Chris insisted that we spend at least one lunch at Hot Doug’s – otherwise known as “The Sausage Superstore and Encased Meat Emporium.”

Hot Doug's Specials Menu

Hot Doug’s is a bit of an enigma. It is a tiny space by Chicago standards, and their hours are 10:30am – 4:00pm six days a week. You are almost always guaranteed to wait in line—sometimes for hours—while you drool at the thought of eating these encased masterpieces. Doug Sohn creates all of his sausages in-house, and each sandwich receives careful consideration in pairing the ingredients.

HT Review: Governor’s Ball Music Festival

Governor’s Ball Music Festival @ Governor’s Island, June 18

Words: Carla Danca

The inaugural Governor’s Ball Music Festival was held on Governor’s Island this past weekend, proving that NYC can still move with the best of them. The first time festival took advantage of the beautiful grounds and isolated location to call out all the alternative people of the city dressed in their finest freaky gear. From bikini tops to rainbow socks, it seemed that all of Brooklyn traded in their skinny jeans for a day in the sun. Governor’s Ball treated show-goers to amazing sights and sounds from a wide variety of electronic inspired artists.

With all the necessary items for a party it’s no surprise that acts like People Under the Stairs gave it up for marijuana and beer drawing huge crowds that were happy to sing along with them “If you don’t like it then get the fuck outta here.” Big Boi followed, giving the crowd the hits they craved like Ms. Jackson. The song drew more than just applause from the crowd as hot pink bras found their way onto the stage! But it was Empire of the Sun that won most outrageous act of the night with multiple costume changes and a troupe of dancers that made it hard to take your eyes off the stage for even a minute.
