Earlier this spring, we reported that Jay Lane was leaving his gig as part of the two-headed drum attack in Furthur to rejoin Primus to reform the band’s original lineup
This song comes off a 1979 album by the Charlie Daniels Band titled Million Mile Reflections. Vassar Clements also deserves some songwriting credit, as he wrote the fiddle hook (basically) in his tune Lonesome Fiddle Blues.
For such a popular song, there are not a whole lot of real covers out there. Because of this, I’ve decided to include two renditions where the artist has made some slight changes to the subject matter of the song. If I had not done this – you would be looking at all jamband versions, and I try to avoid that the best I can.

Les Claypool is a rare beast. After being asked to score music for a videogame (“Mushroom Men”) and a horror film about a mutant pig (“Booneville Stomp”) he decided to keep the weird juices flowing and put out a full length album. Maybe he should have slowed his roll a bit. Of Fungi and Foe is a scattered, loose effort that feels like Les is reheating some leftovers.
The cult of Claypool has worshipped for years at the alter of Primus’s unique sound but greatest hit packages are never for the die-hards, they serve as an intro or a recap of a band you may have missed over the years, in either of these roles …Zingers succeeds.
When Primus played, they were tight, if not as powerful or spacious as in past outings, but with the ambivalence or possible anger being displayed from one of the quirkiest front men in the business, I think it is safe too say that it was an off night for the group who ironically usually just Sucks!

On the final stop on the the second leg of their Tour de Fromage reunion tour, Primus brought their high energy quirky rock to the nations capital. With political rants expressed in between songs while playing the entire Sailing The Seas of Cheese, album, Les Claypool used the first amendment to his advantage at Constitution Hall.
