Sample Upcoming Releases: R.E.M. / Robbie Robertson / Strokes / Death Cab / Paul Simon

This year has already gotten off to a good start where studio albums from our favorite artists are concerned, but as we enter the third month of 2011 samples from a number of releases we’ve had our eyes on are now available. We wanted to take this opportunity to point our readers in the direction of places to check out these new LPs.

R.E.M. – Collapse Into Now

Head to NPR’s First Look to listen to what the band and some reviewers consider a “return to form” for the seminal alt-rock band.

Robbie Robertson – How to Become Clairvoyant

I’ve had a chance to listen to the whole album and it’s by far my favorite of 2011 thus far. You can sample He Don’t Live Here No More and When The Night Was Young through Robertson’s Facebook Page.

Vid: The Decemberists – Down By The Water

With their foray into the world of rock operas now past them, literary-folk-prog act The Decemberists will return to a simpler sound with their next studio effort – The King Is Dead. The album, due out early next year, finds the Portland-based act joined by folkie Gillian Welch on seven tracks as well as REM guitarist Peter Buck for three.

Last week, The Decemberists stopped by Conan to perform the album’s first single, Down By The Water, with Welch. READ ON

R.E.M.: Fables of the Reconstruction – 25th Anniversary Edition

Few archival releases are as revelatory as this 25th Anniversary edition of R.E.M.’s , so it’s perfectly appropriate the packaging recalls nothing so much as a limited edition, designed by the band itself. Replica LP sleeves, individual portraits of the four men as well as a booklet and a large foldout poster are all extensions of the original artwork.

Last Week’s Sauce: June 28th – July 4th

Happy Belated Independence Day Hidden Track readers. Over the weekend there were enough Rock & Roll Fireworks and renditions of The Star Spangled Banner to last a lifetime. We’ll go relatively easy on the patriotic front and we’ll get right down to business.

[Thanks to richfor this week’s photo]

And we continue to take all the selected tracks, normalize them, create some simple fades and put it into one easy to download MP3 for you.

Artist & Title: moe. – Nebraska, Ugly American
Date & Venue: 2010-07-04 Stone Pony – Asbury Park, NJ
Taper & Show Download: The Other Scott Bernstein

The best way for me to select tracks for Last Week’s Sauce is when I steal the ideas from my friends. When I saw ScottyB (not the ScottyB who taped this show) send out over his Facebook feed, “can’t believe moe. busted out Ugly American. Been waiting 14 years for that one.” – I knew immediately what one of the bands for this piece would be. moe. plays tonight at the LC Outdoor Pavilion in Columbus, OH.

Cover Wars: Femme Fatale Edition

While Femme Fatale, which appears on 1967’s The Velvet Underground & Nico, is written about Edie Sedgwick – feel free to think about your favorite Femme Fatale as you listen to this week’s covers. Maybe it’s even someone in your life, has anyone written you down as #37 in her book?

R.E.M.: Murmur (Deluxe Edition)

So wondrous was the sound of R.E.M.’s Murmur upon its release in 1983, that the deceptive simplicity and haunting air of this music is no less perfect in re-mastered and expanded form over twenty-five years later.

R.E.M. Live

R.E.M. Live isn’t going to turn their naysayers to the R.E.M. sound, but it proves a better late that never live package, or at least a well needed hold-me over until their next studio release due in early 2008.

The Minus Five: The Gun Album

As a collective, the latest from The Minus 5 is summed up by “Cigarettes Coffee and Booze” and “Twilight Distillery,” two substance flavored tracks that toy with rockabilly, country and jangly pop. Sure, we’ve heard this all before with The Minus 5, but it’s the guests that keep you coming back. “The Gun Album” is no exception.
