Dramatic singer/songwriter Ryan Adams surprised many of his fans yesterday by posting a note on his blog explaining that his days as a member of the Cardinals are finished after the band’s upcoming tour. Besides selling a bunch of tickets for the “final shows” – I bought ducats for the Montclair show – Ryan depressed the hell out of his fanbase.

I am very sorry if my blog post concerning my need to walk away for however long from cardinals( and from doing music related to the music i have made during my solo career and during my very long and substantially frustrating time at my former label ) was alarming or shocking or seemed off base. it was not my intention to be dramatic. I feel like i am entitled to my feelings and that i certainly do not deserve to be further ridiculed for my deteriorating inner ear issues and the physical pain that goes along with that.

Cardinology isn’t the strongest Ryan Adams release to date, not even close, but it flows as a cohesive song cycle, perhaps a step forward for an artist who has recently struggled with those inner demons.
It’s no secret that Ryan Adams has received his fair share of criticism – from both the media and listeners alike – over the length of his career. I’ve heard so many of the same, overused adjectives thrown his way that they’ve now become clichés to avoid. But, for the sake of argument, let’s review: prolific, eccentric, egotistical, volatile…just to name a few. I mean, didn’t Adams once kick an audience member out of a show after that supposed fan taunted him with a “Summer of ’69” song request? Or is that an urban legend?
Releasing one, two and sometimes three studio albums a year, calling Ryan Adams prolific would be an understatement. However for every brilliant Cold Roses there is a "did we really need this" 29. With the Follow the Lights EP, Adams has released perhaps his most unblemished recording since Gold.
