The best moments of Soulive’s last visit to Vermont, in April of ‘08 occurred when the core trio had the stage to themselves and ripped it up without interruption for over thirty minutes, reminding what a powerful band they’d become in their (close to a) decade together. The high points of the Halloween run at Higher Ground exceeded even that altitude.
Royal Family Ball @ Terminal 5, October 2
Last Saturday night saw New York City’s Terminal 5 play host to the 3rd annual Royal Family Ball presented by Royal Family Records. With a huge sound and a stage that was bursting at the seams, fans were able to partake of a rotating set of jazz and hip-hop artists that included the members of Soulive, Lettuce, The Shady Horns, Nigel Hall, Talib Kweli and John Scofield.
Highlights included tracks from Soulive’s homage to the Beatles, Rubber Soulive, with Come Together, Something, Eleanor Rigby and I Want You (She’s So Heavy). A surprise appearance by Warren Haynes sealed the night for most, as he traded verses with Nigel Hall and blistering guitar licks with John Scofield on Born Under a Bad Sign.

Rubber Soulive is an album full of tunes done for the exactly right reason: total love for the subject at hand. Add in the groove factor and you have one great piece of work.
Soulive fans looking for an all-together-different side to Eric Krasno’s playing style on his debut solo record Reminisce will most likely be disappointed. This is far from a stylistic departure for Krasno as his knack for the groove comes through as sharp as ever, which, for most, is a good thing.
Whoops! Looks like we have entered into some type of wormhole because something seems funny about this edition of Last Week’s Sauce. Our President is William Jefferson Clinton and Elian Gonzales has been recently returned to his native Cuba. Gas prices are continuing to rise, we’re currently looking at $1.46 a gallon up 25% from last summer’s average of $1.17. And of course, there is a jamband show on every block. Let’s have a listen in!

21 year-old guitarist Derek Trucks continues to be a musical force to be reckoned with. Trucks was officially made a member of The Allman Brothers Band last summer and in between playing Red Rocks earlier this month and picking up the second leg of ABB tour now, Derek snuck in a few gigs with his solo band.

Jackie Greene is on the road in a slightly more stripped down setup than you are used to seeing from him live. The shows are being billed as the Jackie Greene Acoustic trio, and he has regularly been performing a few songs solo acoustic as well. He certainly has the song catalog to effectively pull this off. Greene plays tonight at Old Rock House in St. Louis.

Lenny is the tenth and final track on Stevie Ray Vaughan’s 1983 debut album Texas Flood. The song’s title is a tribute to SRV’s wife Lenora Bailey.
Jeff Kitts sums up this tune very well in the book Guitar World Presents Stevie Ray Vaughan,
Like any master musician, Vaughan was just as comfortable with slow, delicate ballads as he was with barn burners. Vaughan composed the beautiful ballad, “Lenny,” for his first wife, and recorded it on Texas Flood. “Lenny” is very Hendrix influenced; it’s sort of a cross between “Little Wing” and “Angel,” two of Hendrix’s greatest ballads.
