MP3 Boot Camp: Patagonia Music Benefit

The clothing company Patagonia has teamed up with some of our favorite bands to launch the Patagonia Music Collective with proceeds to benefit non-profit environmental groups. Acts such as moe., Umphrey’s McGee, Pearl Jam, Jack Johnson and Medeski, Martin and Wood are participating by making an exclusive track available for purchase ($.99 each) through the Patagonia Music Website.

For this week’s Boot Camp column, we wanted to point you in the direction of five Patagonia Music Collective tracks that are well worth the buck…

Umphrey’s finally offers a studio version of a track that predates the band.

Pearl Jam kicks down a live version of this classic track from its debut LP.

moe. share a Chuck Garvey-written original called One Life that the band debuted at Summer Camp last year. Back on January 31st, moe. performed One Life and seven other originals at the Patagonia World Headquarters in Ventura, CA. Head over to Jambands.com to read Garvey’s take on the genesis of One Life. California rockers Toad The Wet Sprocket have made an exclusive acoustic take from 1991’s Fear LP available for purchase.

As we mentioned earlier this month, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals have been on a roll of late. February was no different as the band played sold out shows in Boston, New Orleans, Atlanta and elsewhere. Fans in Dallas were given a special treat when Grace sang a duet with Scott Tournet of country star Kenny Chesney’s You and Tequila, a song that will appear on his upcoming album, Hemingway’s Whiskey.

Umphreys McGee is on a streak of its own, selling out 19 of its first 23 dates of 2011, including the past 10 straight shows on this month’s tour. Sit-ins on the tour have ranged from legendary pop-star John Oates to one-man-band Keller Williams to the mini-blues sensation – 15-year-old Jake Haldenwang. Keyboardist Joel Cummins left the fans with this final thought, “Thank you…best tour ever.”

New Year’s Eve 2010-2011 Concerts Roundup – 25 Setlists & Show Notes

December 31st is the biggest night for live music of the year. An argument might be made for Halloween, but I’m not buying it. Your non-live-music-loving-friends don’t say things like, “Halloween is the most anti-climactic day of the year” while you sit there and just snicker. We’ve been a little Phish heavy this week so let’s take a look at how 24 other bands rang in 2011.

Side Note: This was my first time using embedded images from setlist.fm and I must say it looks super slick. That site has really got it going on, I hope the quality of data improves as more people use it, because with better information – statistics like “What songs did LCD Soundsystem play in 2010” will be really useful to have for a wide variety of bands.

A Memory of Music: December 2010

Welcome to another installment of A Memory of Music. Each month, we show you a different side of the scene, so join us for a trip down memory lane for December 2010 and remember to click on the photos for full resolution images. For the month of December it ‘twas the season of Santa Clauses and holiday parties. From Brooklyn to San Francisco, and a few places in between, the bands dressed in their finest to spread the cheer.

December in Chicago is all about Umphrey’s McGee.  Several weeks before their 3-day New Years Eve run, guitarists Brendan Bayliss and Jake Cinninger treated their fans to an intimate acoustic show with lots of guest sit-ins playing both UM songs and a wide range of covers. This year marked the 8th Annual Holiday Show, which benefits the USTORM Foundation. Those who came early were treated to an Umphrey’s Garage Sale where fans could buy vintage merchandise at a discount and a few lucky girls and boys could enjoy a picture with Santa Ryan Stasik.

In the spirit of giving, legendary King Crimson guitarist Robert Fripp played four free shows on Dec 3rd and 4th in the Winter Garden of the World Financial Center in Lower Manhattan. The shows were billed as Soundscapes. For those fortunate enough to attend, Robert suggested they may be the last of the “Frippertronics” pieces and possibly his final public performancesREAD ON for more incredible images from December…

Umphrey’s McGee: El Rey Theatre, Albuquerque, NM 9/28/10

I can’t believe they came to Albuquerque!” exclaimed the young girl in the printed sundress.  But I don’t think she was referencing President Obama and his entourage’s visit to the Duke City earlier that day.  Rather, as we were standing in the upstairs bathroom of The Historic El Rey Theatre in downtown Albuquerque, she must have been talking about the true reason New Mexicans from all walks of life came together this night:  Umphrey’s McGee was in town!
