Sara Borges and the Broken Singles: Diamonds In The Dark

[rating=4.50]

Sarah Borges and the Broken Singles do more than just channel the past. True, Diamonds in the Dark is full of imagery of days gone by, but the package is fresh. Touching on every raw influence of rock, the end result is an album that is equal parts pristine and raw, touching the old, but very much new.

Sarah Borges and the Broken Singles clearly dig deep into the core of rock n roll, coming up with their own clear mix of rockabilly, blues, soul, bubblegum, country and punk.  Centered on Sarah Borges’ rich, warm voice – that’s just as passionate when she’s subtle as when she’s brash – the rhythms move from driving to sublime and anything in between, setting the dramatic tone as it changes along the way. Filling in the meandering gaps, the pedal steel shares the understated movement of the vocals and brings out much of the songs’ color.

Diamonds in the Dark burns slow and warm with both the music of the past, and the roots of the present. But there’s a difference between those two.  One is just a revival, but Sarah Borges and company show us that the roots are still alive and growing today.
