Bruce Springsteen MusiCares Tribute: Neil Young & Crazy Horse, Sting, Alabama Shakes, Jim James, Mumford & Sons and More

Each Grammys weekend, the music world comes together to celebrate the MusiCares Person Of The Year with a dinner, auction and tribute concert. This year, MusiCares, which is the health and human services organization affiliated with The Recording Academy, honored New Jersey native Bruce Springsteen at the L.A. Convention Center. Not only did the likes of Neil Young and Crazy Horse, Sting, the Alabama Shakes, Jim James and Tom Morello and Mumford & Sons pay their respects to The Boss by covering one of his songs, but Springsteen himself closed out the evening with a five-song set.

Comedian Jon Stewart hosted, working in stories about his own New Jersey upbringing and how Springsteen’s music played a big role in his life. Between Alabama Shakes opening the evening with Adam Raised A Cain and Neil Young and Crazy Horse closing out the tribute set with Born In The U.S.A., there were 16 covers performed. Among those were Mumford & Sons bringing their own edge to I’m On Fire, John Legend’s solo piano version of Dancing In The Dark, James and Morello pairing up for The Ghost Of Tom Joad, Sting’s Lonesome Day and Elton John’s take on Streets of Philadelphia.

When the auction that preceded the concert wasn’t pulling in enough money for Springsteen’s liking, Bruce upped the ante by throwing in a guitar lesson, a guided tour of backstage, eight concert tickets and a tray of lasagna cooked by his mother Adele. Apparently that worked as a New Jersey woman won with a $250,000 bid.

After the tributes, Springsteen took the stage with a few members of the E Street Band and additional musicians for a pair of songs from Wrecking Ball, classics Thunder Road and Born To Run as well as a Glory Days finale featuring all of the evening’s performers.
