The title track from Thao & The Get Down Stay Down’s latest record We The Common is a upbeat number that features hand claps and a cheery chorus of back-up singers cooing oohs and aahs. Dedicated to Valerie Bolden, the tune was inspired by an advocacy visit that Thao Nguyen made to a woman’s prison, where she met Bolden, who was serving a life sentence without parole.
