Video: Glenn Jones – Bergen County Farewell

Credited as the inventor of American Primitivism, guitarist John Fahey fused open tuning finger picking with traditional folk and blues sounds, influencing the likes of Leo Kottke, M. Ward and Jim O’Rourke. You can also add Glenn Jones to that list. The guitarist founded the post-rock act Cul de Sac, who played a particularly complicated brand of noisy instrumental sound collages that’s recommended for fans of both Sonic Youth and Yo La Tengo.

When Jones released his first solo album in 2004, the guitarist had shifted to the more traditional acoustic sounds that Fahey had made famous. Last week Jones released his fourth solo album, My Garden State, via venerable indie-label Thrill Jockey. Recorded in the New Jersey home his family moved to in 1966, the album is full of beautiful, finger-picked, pastoral instrumentals.
