If we were to make a snap judgement about Deer Tick’s fifth studio album, Negativity, solely based on its lead single The Rock, we think we might be in for one of the all-time great break-up records. The tune, which singer John McCauley describes as “a song about being in love with an artist and subsequently having your heart broken by that artist,” which if we’d have to guess is about his broken engagement to Nikki Darlin, the guitarist for country-punk act Those Darlins. Starting as a slow plaintive dirge, the song kicks into a driving aggressive bar rock number that manages to fuses elements of both Nirvana and Bruce Springsteen.
