Video: The Melodic – On My Way

Not too many labels boast a track record like Anti Records, the label best known for its diverse lineup of artists including Wilco, Tom Waits, The Black Keys, Merle Haggard, Neko Case, Blackalicious and Michael Franti. They rarely miss, so when they take a chance on a relatively unestablished artist it’s worth paying attention.

The latest signing is The Melodic, a London folk act that infuses Calypso, African and pop elements into their multi-instrumentalist approach. The music is catchy – perhaps too catchy for some – but also highly enjoyable. The closest comparison is Johnny Flynn, but if that’s not a familiar name think Noah and the Whale, Allo Darlin or Fanfarlo. I’m guessing this band will have a big year, so check them out on their current US tour dates for what will probably be the last chance to see them in an intimate bar/small club setting in the US.
