Giveaway: Share Your Favorite Eddie Vedder Vocal Moment, Win a Pearl Jam Prize Pack

Pearl Jam Prize Pack

Earlier this month, Pearl Jam released their 10th studio album, Lightning Bolt. Hopefully all you Vedder-heads already bought 12 copies apiece, but now you’ll have a chance to win a giant prize pack, including a limited edition vinyl copy of the album, a limited edition PJ Blue Wrigley Stadium T-shirt (size L), a Lightning Bolt poster (not featured in above image), a window decal (also not featured), a sticker pack, and a set of Don Pendleton Lightning Bolt postcards.

To win, share your favorite Eddie Vedder vocal moment, studio or live. By “moment,” we mean a specific part within a performance (like a high note he reaches on a bad-ass live version of “Alive” or a visceral growl on the studio version of “Mind Your Manners”). So here are the rules: Share an audio or video clip of the performance in question, tell us when the moment happens, and explain why it’s the greatest. Be creative.

The deadline for the giveaway is next Friday, November 1st, at 5:00 p.m. EST.

Only one of you will win — but just as a reminder, Lightning Bolt is available to purchase on iTunes.

  1. MTV, live debut performance of “Animal”. From start to finish, ferocious, fierce, and that growl…awesome.

  2. It may be brand new in EV’s history, but my favorite Vedder vocal moment, currently, comes in the new song, Swallowed Whole. I just really love the whole song, but there is one part that makes me put it on repeat…
In the fourth verse, he sings,
“I can feel the sun, I can see the sound
I can set myself right here and
    Drown, drown, drown, drown
    D-D-DROWN, drown, drow-own”
I love that he stutters the D, and draws out the “ow-own” -> d-d-drown, drown, drown.
The stutter makes it seem like he’s banking on his vocal chords like they’re a drum (and I LOVE drums!!)! And the drawn out “drow-own” at the end of the verse just makes it seem like he is drowning and calling out…

Verse in question starts at 1:03 in this audio on YouTube, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IiJoIQhw7TE

1:13 is where the stutter comes in.
    Enjoy! 🙂

  3. My fave vocal moment is something that EdVed does only occasionally in live renditions of Black… It’s the part where he sings “tattooed all I see, all that I am, all I’ll be…” when he extends the “be” for up to 18 seconds. I first witnessed this live at the April 28, 2003 gig at the Spectrum in Philly; it’s truly an incredible moment.

  4. My favorite Eddie Vedder vocal moment is when he hits the “I just want to scream HELLO!” in ‘Elderly Woman Behind a Counter in a Small Town’ at PJ20. The lights come up, everyone’s singing in unison with their arms raised to the sky, and it’s truly a special communal moment. While I had seen Pearl Jam numerous times, I had never gotten into the whole “touring fans” thing and this was my very first time ever seeing them outside of California. Traveled to Alpine Valley with people I had met through their message board, one whom I met that had traveled from the Dominican Republic. It was great to meet so many fans from all over the world who you feel an instant kinship with. I’ve never had that feeling with any other band. That moment still gives me chills as it’s about way more than the actual vocal performance. The song reaches its peak right there with everyone, band and fans, together as one. That bond that people from all walks of life shared that weekend was truly special and shows the power of music to unite.

Starts in just after 3:35 of this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DjdKqHswGGY

  5. the first pj song i have ever heard was “parachutes”.in the age of 8 i got the self-titled album as a gift from my older brother, and because it was hard for me to listen to the strong hard-rock songs i listened to the ballads first. that moment when eddie reach the high note in the chorus, is the moment when i fell in love with this band and his voice. though it has been 7 years since i first heard this song, it still make me feel the same as i felt then.

http://youtu.be/-p8T1GKdWFI the moment begins at 1:13 i think

  6. All of the different versions of Yellow Ledbetter… He never sings the same lyrics twice. Would post video but there are too many

  7. my favorite vocal EV moment happened in 2003 on 12th of June in Bonner Springs/USA. It has been a cuple words he said though, a perfect timing timing for them what made this moment sooo damn special and is chasing shivers down my spine whenever I listen to it. The opener of that show has been Release (my favorite opener anyway) and the weather was shi… it was raining and thunder and lightning bolts (oh, pun intended LOL) all around. They started this song and it kept raining and even on the bootleg you can hear how the crowd reacts to several thunders or light ing bolts….until that part of the song when Ed is singing “oh, dear dad, can you see this now…I am myself, like you somehow” and right at that moment a huge lightning bolt scattered the sky and Ed just said “Hi Dad” oooh the emotion…… you can feel it on the bootleg, you don’t have to have been there to feel this.
sadly there is no video on youtube (at least I can’t find any and I’ve been looking for it for years now) but I can attach a (Dropbox)link to the mp3 file of that song. Enjoy, if you don’t know it yet.

  8. If you want to get the true ferocity of a PJ song, find what was in Ed’s heart and mind when he sings a song. Just listen to 1/2 Full from June 2,2003 @ Irvine CA. The whole song is performed with heartfelt sincerity by the entire band. The ending is spectacular, you can feel Ed’s desperation imploring the crowd do something … save the world…do something. It is one of my all time, if not my all time favorite live performances. Listen to it, DO SOMETHING — SAVE THE WORLD — DO SOMETHING!

  9. This ‘song’ contains some of the most beautiful sounds to have graced this planet. This version, specifically, elicits such emotion and passion that words can’t explain. My younger brother once told me I shouldn’t tell people I actually like this! I have no shame! This song not only showcases Ed’s raw, emotion-packed vocal abilities, it reaches deep down inside and speaks to me physically, emotionally, and spiritually. While the whole song is absolutely amazing and climatic, and must be enjoyed from beginning to end (and listened to several times!) a couple highlights are worth mentioning:

The vibrato/run starting at 2:40. Can you say ‘chills’?!

The raw, primeval, guttural sounds at ~3:05 and ~3:43. The word ‘yum’ comes to mind. I can’t even put into words how that touches me in so many places! (I’ll try to keep this clean).
Who needs therapy and anti-depressants when we have Eddie Vedder?

  10. My favorite Eddie moment is the beginning of Release at Wrigley Field July 19, 2013. At 1:20 on the attached clip he starts in with “Ohhhhh” and it just vibrated right through to my heart and reminded me of why I love Eddie & Pearl Jam so much. For me the Wrigley show was EPIC and I love to watch the clips & listen to the show over & over to relive it as often as possible. As much as I loved the show, the beginning of Release takes me back to Wrigley every single time I hear it and I get chills and feel it in my heart!

  11. “There is more than one way to skin a cat”
“Who the fuck is out there skinning cats”
Just before slow version of lukin

  12. Come Back- Ottawa Sept 14, 2011

Eddie dedicated this song to me and my mom. While he sang it to me, I cried my eyes out. The part where hes singing to me and sings “IT’S OK, BABY IT’S OK”.

That part where he adds the BABY, just helped me tremendously in my life, and added that personal feel to the song.

    1. his* The first time I heard this, I was just in awe of him. He has touched my life with his lyrics and voice…I am so thankful that there is an EDDIE VEDDER to enrich us so. Thanks always Eddie for the years of free music therapy!

  13. The tonal shift and depth when he hits the first pre-chorus on Present Tense..

“YOU CAN… spend your time alone, redigesting past regrets OHHHHHH…”

  14. “Welcome to the ice bowl!” from East Troy, Wisconsin, in 2000. Greatest acknowledgment of the crowd and their dedication to the band ever. And the loudest roar I’ve heard personally from any concert crowd, not just PJ.

  15. It was the 10/04/96 show in Charlotte.

It was in memorial stadium, which was a football stadium and the area of the field was General Admission.

Prior to Pearl Jam coming out, the crowd was really pushing up towards the front and it was actually getting a little dangerous, so somebody came out on stage (I don’t know if it was the fire marshall or just somebody from the stage crew) and asked everybody to back up.

Nobody listened. He asked several times and was ignored each and every time.

So the guy goes off stage and a minute later Eddie comes out. He says something to the extend “I want everybody to take two steps back… on the count of three… One, Two, Three.

And 10,000 people, acting as one, take two big steps back.

    It was pretty neat.

  16. Arc at an Eddie live solo show in Philly, was just amazing seeing him use the looping machine to layer his vocals over and over. Must have been 15 layers when he was done on a loop and it sounded amazing. He then smiled, waved, and walked off stage like it was no big deal. 🙂

  17. Greatest vocal moment is from “Sirens”……”I always loved you held you high above too”……god to be able to look in someone’s eyes and they know what you are saying and can feel it too.

Greatest Pearl Jam video captures the signing lady who signs during “Given to fly”

  18. On Lightening Bolt, the Getaway track, my favorite vocal moment is the “rawr” in about the middle of the song. In the Lightning Bolt short film by Danny Clinch I love it at the end, when he is sitting the car and the CD start playing again and he starts rocking out and says “here we go” – great moment.

My favorite live vocal moment is always when, during Release, he sings “I’ll ride the wave where it takes me. I’ll hold the pain, Release Me” – makes me cry every time.

  19. My favorite Eddie Vedder vocal moment was when we saw him in San Antonio this past November. He spoke about his drive from Dallas to San Antonio and how the Texas sunsets are so beautiful. It inspired him so much that he wrote a song, “5 o’clock drive” and then he proceeded to sing it to us. Thanks for the moment, Ed.

  20. My favourite Eddie saying has to be when he sings ”I think of St. John’s to keep me warm” during Wishlist at the St. John’s concert of September 2005!!

  21. Special moment een Eddie Vedder was in Amsterdam. he was singing Indifference and my best friend offered via toes to me so i could stand on them to see a glimp of Eddie while listening.

  22. When he talked about the one worker that worked in the spectrum since the built the place. It just goes to show how in touch they are with there play!! Playing Devo too

  23. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vVevirdGoBY

Eddie live in Chicago, June 2011–Hard Sun!!! Amazing vocals as always, but when he shouts “40 days and 40 nights, and it’s still coming down on me!” Chills, fans going crazy, and then the chant type vocals he does throughout it—- No other leading vocal man with the amazing, unique voice he has.

  24. Satan’s Bed – grand rapids Michigan 2006.absolutely love when Eddie sings “I shit and I stink, I’m real join the club. I’d stop and talk but I’m already in love” and at the very beginning when he’s dancing and swaying. Eddie puts all his feelings into his music and passion into his singing and I loveee itt

  25. My favourite Vedder Vocal Moment was in Winnipeg in 2005 when he grabbed a cell phone out of the crowd, and sang an ad libbed “Hello..” kind of song to the phone at the end of “Daughter”, then had a brief chat with the person on the other end, then returned the phone! So great!

  26. The rightfully famous “It’s okaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyy” tag, when the crowd goes ape as Ed hits that incredible last note. Chills every time.

  27. Bridge School Benefit performance in 1999. Eddie dedicates Last Kiss to one of the handicapped children who is in attendance. From the 1:55 mark an on, he sings Last Kiss directly to her. Eddie smiles the entire time, and so does the girl and her mom. It clearly made her day, and is possibly the greatest moment in her life. This moment would melt anyone’s heart, even the Grinch. Well done Mr. Vedder.

so many to choose from, but i’ll pick this one i was fortunate enough to witness. it’s july 7, 2006, and it’s when ed talks about the inspiration for “long road.” i didn’t pick up on where the story was going until he hit the first chord – around the 5:35 mark in the linked video. then it all made sense, and made it that much more emotional. what followed was the best version of the song i’ve ever heard.

    1. i should add, to help those who don’t know, that this show was in san diego. i’ll never miss a pearl jam show in san diego as long as i live in california.

  29. The line from Love Boat Captain “and the young they can lose hope cause they can’t see beyond today….the wisdom that the old can’t give away hey…. at 2:36 and how he raises his voice to higher octave to emphasize this verse. It’s the beginning of the climax of the song and in context with the rest of the lyrics it really takes the song to another level. In 2003 listening to this in the car after seeing them perform this live, it would really hit me hard and I would tear up every single time.

  30. Best moment is the end of Black during MTV Unplugged when he goes off with the We belong,We belong together” and carries the tune and notes to make it my favorite pearl jam Eddie vedder vocal ever

  31. 1996 Randallstown island, during porch, Eddie started talking about how u should be yourself, and not to let anyone else tell you who you are…I remember crowd surfing during that speech pointing and screaming at the stage, someone grabbed my vans sneaker and chucked it across the venue…I remember walking around for like 3-4 songs after that with my sock squishing into the wet grass, and low and behold I stepped on my sneaker in a totally opposite spot of the show…I will always remember that moment as he was screaming shout it out, cause I was going nutz

  32. During a show in Pittsburgh the band brought a lady on stage who they’d seen at a few shows holding an umbrella with the song title Wash written on it. They asked her how many shows she’d been to and her answer made Eddie gasp. They noticed her, but she had been to dozens of shows. So my favorite vocal moment was his surprise that moment….

  33. My favorite would have to be taking my 12 year old daughter with me to Pearl Jam and her knowing all the songs and singing along with Eddie it showed so much emotion and I knew then she loved the band almost as much as I do. We will be going to our second Pear Jam show together in Virginia Tuesday can’t wait. 🙂 She is 14 new and can’t wait

  34. My favorite Eddie moment took place in Philly. Pearl Jam was playing the Wachovia center, now Wells Fargo Center, and during Crazy Mary, right after Crown of Thorns, the power cut out. Eddie stated that he wasn’t sure which song it was that caused the occurrence, but he just wanted to clarify that he never called Mary crazy in public to her face. Funny yet great because it made you feel like he was such a real person. Thanks Ed. All memories from shows are superb!

  35. MY FAVORITE EDDIE MOMENT: They were performing in Santiago Chile in 2008 performing DAUGHTER and when Eddie hits the high note on the lyric “she will rise above” it brought tears to my eyes as usual but its around 3:14 when you here Eddie start to say NO CLOUDS NO RAIN NO PAIN & at 3:36 you here “LET THE PAIN BE GONE” it was like he was talking to the frightened little girl I used to be. You have to know that when I originally heard this song all those years ago it was what stopped me from taking my own life in an attempt to get my father’s attention, this song gave me the courage to take a stand and to no longer be the victim of my father’s abuse after 15 yrs. If I don’t win this CONTEST that’s fine I just want Eddie and the band and all the PJ fans to know that because of them I am alive happy and in love and married to my best friend. Thanks for saving that little girl’s life in 1995 she thanks you and the grown woman today thanks you from the bottom of her heart 🙂 so guys when you sing the lyrics on SIRENS “Want you to know, that should I go, I always loved you, held you high above too
I studied your face, the fear goes away” PLEASE KNOW THAT THE LITTLE GIRL YOU SAVED AND THE WOMAN I AM TODAY SINGS THAT WITH YOU but most importantly FOR YOU, Thank you to Ryan Reed for providing the platform allowing me to share my story.

Have a great tour guys & be safe

  36. Either Camden, NJ 1998 and Ed is singing “alive” and there is a boy in a wheelchair on the side of the stage. Ed is looking at him, but the boy and his father are looking in the crowd. Ed keeps eye-contact and starts waving (all the while singing). Finally, the father notices and tells the boy to look at Ed and the boy waves.

Or Ed’s explanation of “yellow Ledbetter” in Newark at a solo show in 2008.

  37. Short and sweet. My favorite is when Eddie forgets the lyrics to his own song! Seriously 🙂 it just goes to show you how many songs they’ve brilliantly created and it also shows that Eddie is just a real human like the rest of us. We all mess up sometimes 🙂

  38. My current favorite is the live version if Betterman on PJ20. He lets the crowd sing the while first part and then all of PJ stops playing while the crowd goes wild. Eddie begins to sing the song again. At about 4:30 in the song Ed sings a vocal and the crowd repeats it back to him. He says, “you got it!” Then begins this moment when he and the crowd connects and sing. I get chills every time. I wish I had been here.
    Teri

  39. I have a lot of favorites but my most recent one is
    The Buffalo Show 10/12.2013
It was a sold out show and their was a large area behind the stage that was full of fans, they could not see anything, the stage was in front of them, not great seating at all but every seat was sold out because Pearl Jam fans are the best fans in the world.I felt bad for them, but if my only option was one of those seats,I would have been sitting there with them all, Eddie acknowledged them a few times and then he said to the crowd “if you are all the big city then those people in the back are a small town and were going to turn around and play for them” and they did ! They lowered some of what was blocking their view and the whole band turned around to play Elderly woman…it was beautiful, he acknowledged them, the entire crowd sang and it is one of the many reasons I love Eddie and the band.

  40. There are certain songs like come and black (with we belong together) that will always hit my heart. As far as a favorite moment involving Eddie, it would have to be to Yellow Ledbetter at the Pitts. 2013 show. It was the perfect cap to the perfect show. The entire I was no more than 30 feet from the stage and at some points on the rail. (yes I shared…haha) Not only was EV perfect during the whole performance; He really laid it out there for the sold out show on Yellow Ledbetter. The moment that made at so special however, was the “hang loose” sign Eddie gave me right before walking off stage. For me, that’s enough proof right there that Eddie and the guys truly love their fans. Whether or not I win any contest, I’ll always be proud to love the best band in the world.
oh and heres some proof haha https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rsoKaNzvh1g go to around 3:10. You can see my hand in the left corner than him give it back and do the surfer pose 🙂

  41. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ltjZ8V1BVpQ&feature=youtube_gdata_player

I am so glad someone asks me that specific question. In the Porch version, played on MTV unplugged, at approxamately 3:55 he starts this “heee heee heee heee” building up to a climax. In that moment everything comes together for me. Every single time I hear that I get chills, goosebumps, a smile on my face, tears in my eyes, butterflys in my stomach, tension in my neck, curly hair, uncoordinated legmovements, you name it…It’s a feeling I can not describe to other people. Perhaps some of you can relate…:-)). MARIJE, HOLLAND

  42. Probably would be the first time I saw them, the first of the 4 shows to close out the Spectrum in Philly. I was so excited to see them live finally, that I had pretty much been counting down to the day for like 2 months before hand. And they opened the show with Corduroy

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-F1AbsdTGo&t=40s

Hearing Eddie’s first lyrics being “The waiting drove me maaaaddddd” was beyond fitting, and so very perfect considering how psyched I was to see them finally. Just amazing. This band always manages to get me emotional whenever I see them.

  43. My favourite all time Eddie Vedder vocal moment appears in the song “Blood” on the Vs. album. In the middle of the song before the last verse/chorus, Eddie screams “it’s my Blooooooooooooooooood” for an immense amount of time. The energy and emotion in that scream alone is what makes Eddie Vedder the greatest vocalist of our generation. He’s the “blood” in the veins of honest rock and roll.

  44. The song and the verses that will always move me to tears is “Off he goes” and I LOVE when Eddie voice gets quiet at times during the song..
“..and now i rub my eyes, for he has returned
seems my preconceptions are what should have been burned
    for he still smiles…
    and he’s still strong..
nothing’s changed, but the surrounding bullshit that has grown
    and now he’s home
and we’re laughing like we always did
my same old, same old friend
    until a quarter-to-ten
i saw the strain creep in
he seems distracted and i know just what is gonna happen next
    before his first step
    he’s off again…””
When this song came out I was in California dating my now ‘ex’ boyfriend..I met him in the early 90’s..he was a surfer who loved to surf at El Porto Beach. We were always at a beach..me watching him try to catch a wave..He was a father figure to my now teenage son but he had a sad life. He never met his father so he struggled with that anger throughout our relationship and a long time after..He was a loner by nature but I experienced the best places with him camping and long drives up the 395 to the best remote beautiful places ever..We had some great memories together listening to grunge music and enjoying our road trips. We went to see Pearl Jam together when they were playing near San Bernardino..that was a blast that nite. Years went by and we became “off and on”.. He bought a house up in the San Bernardino Mtns and it was his perfect hideaway but I didnt want to move there.. I left California in 2006 to move to Houston, TX and he stayed in California..I remember crying my whole road trip to Houston thinking about him..We remained friends but 7yrs later to today, he lost his job and lost his car and his house so he is homeless living in his truck up there. My son who is back in Cali just told me this over the summer..We both cried because my son said it was hard to see him living like that..My ex loved those mountains so bad he didnt want to come down from them…That song “Off he goes” reminds me of my ex everytime I hear it..He didnt have a drug problem but he had another kind of pain..#abandonment..

  45. My favorite moment was this week. I saw them in Philly on 10/22/13. It was the band’s 23rd birthday. Eddie shared this with the crowd and started to sing happy birthday (and went into Alive- aahhhhh) in his magical mystical voice. The entire stadium joined in and finished the song with him. Pearl Jam was the soundtrack to my college years when they came on the scene. I have been wanting to see them forever but work, life and kids happened and I never had the chance. It then became a goal to see them live and I was psyched when I heard the buzz about the new album. So over 20 years of being a fan paid off when I got to see them live this week. I am still high. I am still singing. I am driving everyone around me mad talking about the show.
So that was my favorite Eddie moment. He connects. He draws you in and makes you feel appreciated. I will never forget that night and dammit I will NOT wait another 20 years to see the best band ever. Ever.

  46. It is very hard to choose one single moment with a singer like Ed, but here we go … I love the earlier versions of Blood, this clip is a good example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-RTz0JNxNEU. Especially the part from 01:39-02:28 gives me goosebumps and makes me wanna go nuts, but in a good way. The howling, the growl, the rawness, the anger, the vocal range! There are several PJ songs that have qualities like this, but somehow Blood always stood out to me. I loved it right away when I heard it for the first time, but once I knew the backstory and the message, it grew even more on me. And it is still awesome live. Long live Pearl Jam 😀

  47. My favorite moments from Eddie are when his emotions overpower his voice.
During the unplugged performance, Eddie had one of those occur near the end of “Black” when he sings the repeat of the improvised ending “We…we belong, we belong together” at 5:05 of this clip:1992 U
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ChbxMVgGV4

That performance perfectly encapsulates that moment your heart breaks the final time and you realize the one you loved is not coming back. It’s something everyone experiences at some time in your life and the pain in his voice as he sings that improvised line is exactly what a broken heart sounds like.

  48. One of my ALL TIME favorite moments. At the 5:35-45 mark of Not For You at the Gorge in 05, Ed is singing about his wife and little girl, and you can hear him almost break into tears when he says the line “to our home”….I caught it live when it happened and it just made me realize how REAL of a person he/they are. They arent just rock stars that we admire. They are REAL PEOPLE who have families that they are thankful for and are in AWE of like all of us…

  49. One of my favorite moments was at a concert I was at in 1996 @ Randalls Island in NYC. I remember this moment like it was yesterday. During the performance of “Animal” Eddie stops singing because the pit was getting out of control, which I was in. After about 4 minutes of him addressing the crowd and asking to relieve some pressure from the front, he started right back where he left off.
