Sun Kil Moon: April

[rating=3.50]

The last great album from Sun Kil Moon, Ghosts of the Great Highway, was just that – great.  It propelled singer-songwriter Mark Kozelek into the discussion with some of the greats of today, showing off his ability to write dynamic songs such as “Glenn Tiption,” “Carry Me Ohio,” and “Gentle Moon.” But could he continue the magic?

April carries on the momentum, leading off with the ambitious nine-minute gem, “Lost Verses,” which ranks with one of the best songs that Kozelek has written.  The Americana feel of “Heron Blue” and Neil Young-influenced “Tonight the Sky” provide highlights for a mellow album that drags on occasion, but is, for the most part, a well-balanced piece of work.
