Veteran Soul Singer Bobby Womack Passes Away at 70

Veteran soul singer Bobby Womack died Friday June 27th, just two weeks after performing at the Bonnaroo Music Festivl. Womack’s sister says he passed away in his sleep … she says they don’t know the cause of death.

Bobby struggled with multiple health problems throughout his life … including diabetes, pneumonia, colon cancer and the early signs of Alzheimer’s.

Bobby and his brothers formed a group in the ’60s called “The Valentinos” and they recorded the song “It’s All Over Now” before the Rolling Stones released their version — the group’s first #1 hit.  Known for hits including 1972’s ‘Across 110th Street’, Womack’s career carreer seven decades. He released his first single in 1954. Womack enjoyed a rebirth in recent years, appearing on Gorillaz track ‘Stylo’ from the band’s third album, Plastic Beach and even participating in the band’s 2010 tour along with Paul Simonon and Mick Jones of the Clash. This association with Damon Albarn led to him producing Womack’s 2012 album ‘The Bravest Man In The Universe’, which was released by XL.   Womack’s health had suffered in recent years; he’d been treated for colon cancer and in 2013 told fans he had “signs of Alzheimer’s”. In spite of this, he had reportedly been working with Snoop Dogg and Stevie Wonder on new material.
