The Decemberists – “Make You Better” (SONG REVIEW)

[rating=7.00]

“Make You Better” first appeared a week ago, when Decemberists frontman Colin Meloy teased the track and announced the band’s new album, What A Terrible World, What A Beautiful World , through a street-busking performance in Brooklyn, but the studio version hit the internet on Monday.

The song strays away from the country-folk of 2011’s The King Is Dead, offering more of a neutral, piano-driven style more closely resembling 2006’s The Crane Wife. Tucker Martine’s production gives the song a sense of urgency, as the sonic layers clearly build upon one another. “All I wanted was a sliver to call mine,” reveals Meloy, “and all I wanted was a shimmer in your shine.” Interestingly, the classic theatrical narrative that once surrounded their lyrical catalogue seems to have been replaced by introspective personal revelations, which possibly suggests a new direction for the band.
