Marvel studios seems bound and determined to become the reigning kings of all media. They’ve already taken over the world, turning their upstart movie production studio into a billion dollar a year enterprise. On top of that, their ABC shows Agents of SHIELD and Agent Carter have been garnering more and more critic and fan praise as each has progressed. As if these achievements weren’t enough—especially for a company who was bankrupt and very nearly closed at the turn of the century—Marvel has taken the dive into the world of streaming TV.
The first of five planned Netflix series, Daredevil, premieres this April and fan anticipation has reached a fever pitch. Earlier today, the company dropped the first full length trailer for the new series and from the looks of things, Daredevil stands to be another homerun for the company.
Daredevil, from all appearances, looks as though it’s going to make full use of its platform as it shies away from the glossy, mostly family friendly feel of their previous output. Though the studio has long touted the violent, dark undertones the series would have, there has been a bit of skepticism from some fans, still reeling from the laughable Daredevil movie released in 2003.
The difference between now and then, of course, is that for the first time Marvel has full control of the character and is free to do with it what they want. While previous entries into the Marvel Cinematic Universe have had a lighthearted tone, this trailer certainly makes it seem as though Daredevil looks to set the gritty tone for their future Netflix series with action, violence, and blood galore.
Starring Charlie Cox (The Theory of Everything, Stardust) as the titular hero and Vincent D’Onofrio as the villainous Kingpin, Daredevil premieres April 10 on Netflix. The follow up series, AKA Jessica Jones, is currently under production and is slated for release later this year.
