Phox, Fantastic Negrito, Spoon, Jesse Baylin, Giant Sand, Tame Impala & More (VIDEOS)

The Good Shit is a new Glide column which revisits and weeds out the televised and tubed trash of the prior week and highlights the good shit you might have already saw or could have missed.

On Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the Afghan Whigs dropped by for a set of blistering performances that included a cover of Fleetwood Mac’s Tusk.” Last year, the band released Do To the Beast, which featured “The Lottery” and “I Am Fire,” both of which the Whigs delivered on the program.

Phox is six friends from Baraboo, Wis and is led by the smoky vocals of Monica Martin and backed by a tight knit (clothese too) band. All observations aside, Phox is geared for a big breakthrough in 2015 as show in their visit to NPR.

Another”they got it good” NPR story is that of Fantatic Negrito. With almost 7,000 entries to choose from, Fantastic Negrito was the winner of the Tiny Desk Concert Contest for his performance of “Lost In A Crowd” in a freight elevator in Oakland. He returned to NPR for a three song set that was brilliantly moving to say the least.

Incorporating surf rhythms and keyboard textures into his work, Lord Huron’s central songwriter Ben Schneider has gone Tarantino on us. Check out the excellent new track that recalls the vibe of Bob Dylan’s original material from the last decade or so.

Howe Gelb is ever the prolific songwriter so when it was announced last week that Giant Sand would be releasing a new album in the coming months it was little surprise. But the fact that the Tucson icon recorded the lead track “Transponder” with Jason Lytle of Grandaddy was even more a surprise and a dazzling listen.

Only Britt Daniel can sing a line like “I don’t have time for holy rollers” like it was the most prolific run of words in the last year. La Blogothèque releaed Spoon’s new Take Away Show last week and the performance featured exclusive versions of “Inside Out” and the band’s cover of Ann Margret’s “I Just Don’t Understand” featuring Daniel on vocals and guitar accompanied only by Alex Fischel’s piano.

Win who? The little brother of Arcade Fire royalty is making like a rock star of late (he actually looks like a rough cut John Mayer here on Letterman) with a debut album that’s making for rave reviews and exceeding what most people thought of the overly pretentious Reflektor. Check out his rock revue anthem “Take My Sides” that is something rockabilly for the American Apparel sect.

Jesse Baylin’s highly new album, Dark Place is due for release April 7th and the video for “Creppers” reflects the song’s slinky cool and deviant side.

Steve Gunn’s 2014 full length Way Out Weather was the pinnacle album of his overlooked career that is now finally getting some long over due recognition. What better way to ride the momentum that go the visual route to some of these bold compositions – check out his new video for Way Out Weather’s “Wildwood.”

The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion’s video for “BETTE Vs The NYPD” features comedian Bridgett Everett owning the cops and owning the room in this interrogation spoof. JBE’s new LP Freedom Tower – No Wave Dance Party 2015 is due on 3/24 via Mom + Pop.

Another artist geared for a big 2015 is Jacco Garder whose upcoming album Hypnophobia, is to be released the first week of May. The video for the sublime track “Find Yourself” was released that fans of Tame Impala will certainly dig.

And speaking of Australia’s new favorite sons- Tame Impala released the long awaited first track of their HIGHLY anticipated but still untitled third album. Check out this fly out of the seat of your pants or shit your pants it’s so good number “Let It Happen” – gotta dig the drumming here…
