Endless Highway: The Music of The Band

Many thanks to the 429 folks for building the music section of the Endless Highway website, which has full samples of each tune. I listened to the whole thing tonight — only a handful of songs sound like the originals, and that’s a serious feather in the album’s cap. On the “Check This Out” tip, Steve Reynolds’ Stage Fright, Roseanna Cash’s Unfaithful Servant, Blues Traveler’s Rag Mama Rag and Trevor Hall’s Life Is a Carnival are all worthy of your undivided aural attention.

Endless Highway

Here’s the complete tracklist for Endless Highway, which reads kinda like a fantasy set that some dude on a message board posted as a joke:

Jack Johnson “I Shall Be Released”
The Allman Brothers “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down”
Death Cab For Cutie “Rocking Chair”
My Morning Jacket “It Makes No Difference”
Lee Ann Womack “The Weight”
Jakob Dylan “Whispering Pines”
Gomez “Up On Cripple Creek”
Bruce Hornsby “King Harvest”
Rosanne Cash “Unfaithful Servant”
Blues Traveler “Rag Mama Rag”
Joe Henry “Bessie Smith”
Guster “This Wheel’s On Fire”
Widespread Panic “Chest Fever”
John Hiatt & North Mississippi Allstars “Ain’t No More Cane”
Jackie Greene “Look Out Cleveland”
ALO “Ophelia”
Steve Reynolds “Stage Fright”
Josh Turner “When I Paint My Masterpiece”
Gov’t Mule “The Shape I’m In”
Trevor Hall “Life is a Carnival”
The Roches “Acadian Driftwood”

Now if we can only get this group of artists to do a tour promoting the release of this thing, we will definitely be in business…

  1. “Gov’t Mule” – The Shape I’m In and Allman Brothers “The Night they Drove old Dixie Down” sound about right. Jack Johnson doing “I Shall Be Released” sounds real wrong

  2. Well said, Rico. I didn’t feel the need to bash anyone’s version of anything, and JJ’s version ain’t terrible, but I think I’d rather have heard Jim J. Bullock doing I Shall Be Released than Jack Johnson.

  3. Meanwhile, I just saw this on Jambands.com:

Col. Bruce Hampton and Efrem Towns To Join Last Waltz Ensemble Benefit

As we previously reported, the Last Waltz Ensemble has announced that it will perform two nights at Smith’s Olde Bar later this month as a benefit for the Ricky Keller Foundation. A number of guest performers will join in as well for the two performances in Atlanta on November 24 and 25. On both Friday the 24th and Saturday the 25th the Dirty Dozen Brass Band’s Efrem Towns will appear along with Rick Richards (Georgia Satellites), Tommy Talton (Cowboy, Gregg Allman), Benji Shanks (Captain Soularcat), Mimi Holland and many others. The Saturday show also will feature contributions from Bruce Hampton and Caroline Aiken. The Last Waltz Ensemble, named after the Martin Scorsese documentary, celebrates “the vibe, energy and music of The Band.”

Ricky Keller, who passed away in 2003, was a longtime Hampton collaborator, as well as the conductor of the Zambiland Orchestra and a co-founder of Project Z with Jimmy Herring and Jeff Sipe. The Rickey Keller Foundation “seeks to couple funding with established organizations that work with special needs children. The Foundation operates with the mission to secure one-on-one lessons for children who show musical aptitude but who are facing financial difficulty. The Ricky Keller Foundation will allow Ricky’s presence as a spirited teacher and motivator to be perpetuated by those most in need of the transformational power and magic of music in their lives.”

    Pretty sweet. Atlanta, I’m jealous.

  4. Yeah…I just saw The Last Waltz a few weeks ago. I would have to say that it was the best music movie that I have seen.

But I guess that’s to be expected with the lineup.

  5. **You know, those guys,” she retorted. “Those guys in their twenties that talk about The Band like they’re the greatest thing in the world, as if possessing such a love for an obscure group of rock musicians you weren’t even old enough to see makes you cooler than everyone else, when really it just makes you an elitist that refuses to play nice with his own generation.”**

Yeah, that’s me in a nutshell. Keep the faith, brother!

  6. Jack Wingate and I pretty much came up with the same conclusion as this writer, about 10 years ago, regarding the Band and its legacy. Most of the stuff that passes itself as rock these days often makes me want to throw up, that and along with its listeners who wear their clothes backwards including their hats, who are tatooed and pierced, and speak a language that sometimes resembles english. What a sad commentary on the jerks who promote this shit on TV and radio…. Don’t get me started…!
