  1. I take issue with that Idolator piece you linked to. But it’s not that I’m offended as a Phish fan — I’m offended as a snarky douchebag. You know that Seinfeld episode where Jerry takes offense to Tim Watley’s Jewish jokes as a comedian, not a Jew? That’s how I feel with what they wrote.

After clumsily wiggling Jimmy Buffett into the headline, the Gawker folk ended the nugget with “Anastasio’s booking lasted seven hours, and included three bass solos, a cover of the Move’s entire Message To The Country album, and a flying hamburger bus.”

Really? That’s the best they could do with it? I like the Gawker blogs — Deadspin, in fact, is my favorite site on the world wide web — but that’s just amateur hour right there. Maybe it’s because I know the material, but I thought they were bringing their .22 caliber shit to a .357 magnum gunfight. If you’re gonna try to craft a Master of Snark attitude, you gotta do better than that. That’s all I’m saying.

  2. How am I feeling?

I’ve been repeating the phrase: “It bums me out” to anyone that asks me about this, and it bums me out for a number of reasons.

It all boils down to family to me, I consider Trey family though I’m not related to him, I’m not his friend, he doesn’t know who I am. But he’s a guy that brought me loads of fun over the years and was the focal point of some of the best days of my life. 60 Phish Shows, 30 Trey shows, Trey means a lot to me.

Trey’s drug problems are no secret, he has spoken about it in recent years in magazines, and listening to the rumor mill or even as simple as witnessing his on-stage demeanor will let you know things are not 100% alright in his world right now.

As I told a few friends when the story broke, it’s a bad day to be a Phish fan, and a great day if you were looking to enter in an online sarcasm contest, as is well illustrated in the pictures included on this blog. Now, this kind of fan response on the Internet was inevitable, the Phantasy Tour Phish message board is nothing but one gigantic sarcasm contest on the whole anyway…

Anyway, back to family, I wouldn’t joke about a real family member, or a friend being in this kind of trouble and drug-dependent spot in their life…people like to put Trey’s mugshot in their online “signatures” on message boards…I’m not sure if these people think they are being clever or they think Trey has hurt them in some way in the past, whether it was: Breaking up Phish, not rehearsing with Phish or the feeling that they the fans had been lied to.

Trey’s never done anything to hurt me, in fact he has brought me a huge amount of joy over the last 8 years, I really hope this public record of drug problems gets him to buckle down and clean up his life once and for all, for the sake of himself, his wife and his two children. I look forward to seeing him for years to come with a Languedoc over his shoulder ready to light up a crowd in ways only he can.

  3. Amen Mr. Onigman, i’ll never get the “Trey owes” me sentiment. One horrible festival should outweigh all the amazing music i’ve seen and friends i’ve been introduced to via Phish?

    LAME

  4. im kinda disappointed that its such a weak bust, its not even worthy of mention……..at least he coulda had dirty needles sticking outta his arms or somethin

  5. a little disappointed he wasn’t busted with h, meth, or crack. he obviously can’t live up to Jerry in so many ways. Onigman, is that a novel you’re working on up there? Jesus Christ!!

  6. This is indeed a bummer. Trey’s chemical habits never bothered me that much, but when you start running afoul of the law, as a middle-aged family man with two kids… that’s a little harder to like. I hope Trey gets whatever he deserves, and I by that I mean either good or bad. (I still respect and admire the guy, though, of course… I mean, come on, the ALO “Hood”… all ’95 “Reba”s… Big Cypress… his work is staggering).
