Morning Listening: Archive Miscellany

Quick, what’s the first song you heard this morning? For me it was moe.’s Plane Crash from the Treymoe.deski Tsunami Benefit at Roseland Ballroom in February 2005. To this day that night stands out as one of the best nights of pure music I’ve ever experienced, almost every song better than the one that preceded it.

That Plane Crash is stupendous, fucking marvelous stuff. There’s a Medeski-led jam that lasts about five minutes and just builds and builds ’til you think your head’s gonna explode. But it doesn’t, and then you realize everyone on the subway is looking at you funny while you blast your iPod and bob your head uncontrollably. In honor of my commute this morning, here are seven tunes you should play now…

That should hold youse all off ’til Pullin’ ‘Tubes is ready for publication…

  1. “Black Peter” – 10/27/79 (Two thoughts: 1) If you love you the BrentMidland – and you don’t have this show with the awesomeness that is “Dancin'”>”Franklin’s” – well, then you don’t TRULY love bearded speedball-lovin’ Michael McDonald-look-a-like former ebony & ivory-ticklers, and B) I agree with Scotty the B, 1979 is their best year ever)

  2. what a great show that was…had a total blast. Jesus, was that really 2 years ago? wow…

oh, first song I heard this morning was Kinski’s “The Wives Of Artie Shaw”. Good damn that is the best instrumental noise rock band I’ve gotten into lately. I know people flame it, but I can’t get enough. Snowboarding to that album stoned is close to seeing god
