Secret Dakota Ring: Cantarell

[rating=3.00]

How Wes Anderson picks the sounds for his films is beyond me. But if he’s reading, he may want to lend an ear to Secret Dakota Ring, a side project driven by OK Go guitarist Andy Ross. Cantarell, SDR’s second full-length aligns itself with Anderson’s films in that it refuses to be classified into a predetermined genre.

"The Fade To Black” is a pertinent ode to fighting against an inevitable loss. Deep, potent percussion gets comfortable early on with heaps of violin. Much like the rest of the record, it rejects the obvious hooks that could be inserted for dramatic flair.  Cantarell possesses an uneven flow yet is still relatively easy on the ears. Ross’s peculiar, translucent vocals haunt Cantarell and provide the only solid foundation. The shift from twangy pop to downtrodden folk is patchy at best. It’s easy enough to skip to the next track but not so easy to resist coming back for more.
