Here We Go Magic: Here We Go Magic

[rating=4.00]

With Here We GoMagic, Luke Temple completes his transformation from everyday singer/songwriter to eccentric bedroom visionary.  Trading standard instrumentation for a four-track, a sampler and some found sounds, Temple arranges broad sonic horizons and soft, intimate whispers into a singular aural vision that is hypnotic from the opening notes to the closing silence.

“Only Pieces” is a mesmerizing polyrhythmic exploration of non-exististentialism, and if you weren’t afraid you’d break it, you’d dance to the delicate skip of “Fangela.”  The other vocal tracks are equally captivating, and though some of the instrumental numbers veer a bit too far into auditory mirror-gazing, the quiet beauty of “Tunnelvision” makes the self-indulgence worthwhile.

With just enough melody to make it pretty, just enough pop to make it accessible, and just enough repetition to make it entrancing, Here We Go Magic takes its place beside other bedroom studio manifestos by the likes of Chad VanGaalen and Will Oldham: its lush, multi-layered production and expansive sonic vistas cast a spell.  From the moment the opening rhythms intertwine, this record doesn’t just sound awesome; it compels you to listen.
