As we get closer and closer to the release of Terminator Genisys we can expect to see the hype machine kick into full gear. Buzz surrounding the fifth entry into the Terminator series has been, at best, lukewarm. Though many out there (myself included) were surprised and pleased by what we saw with the first trailers, the backlash has been swift and harsh from other sources, with many panning the seemingly cheesy effects and suggesting the storyline is more in line with a “Terminator greatest hits” than it is an original movie.
Series creator James Cameron, however, is having none of that.
Despite not having any involvement with the making of the film, Cameron stated in a recent interview that he thinks of “the new film…as the third film.”
“I feel like the franchise has been reinvigorated, like this is a renaissance,” Cameron said in the clip (which you can watch below). “If you like the Terminator films, you’re gonna love this movie.”
Will this be enough to silence the naysayers and detractors? Only time will tell, but it’s still a pretty stunning endorsement for a film that many are still viewing with suspicion and derision. While this makes sense given the sub-standard third and fourth entries into the series, neither of those had this level of support and respect from their creator.
Maybe the future really isn’t set. Hopefully the filmmakers have, this time, chosen a fate worthy of the name Terminator.
Terminator Genisys stars Arnold Schwarzenegger and Emilia Clarke and opens everywhere on July 1.
