Langerado’s Moving: Filter Out the Everglades

Langerado‘s long been our favorite multi-day music festival. It’s more than manageable in terms of both size and scope, it takes place well within civilization, and it never forgot its roots, still catering to jamband fans while reaching out to a broader audience (hey, as long as there are tanks, brah). If it ain’t broke, right?

But draw the shutters, close the shades: Langerado organizers are going for the gusto and moving the festival to a new home (they’re also adding a fourth day). Beginning March 6th and ending on the 9th, the former Phish millennium celebration grounds will host the 6th Annual Langerado festival.

I’m not quite sure how to feel about this — surely it’s a positive development, but there goes the Mid-Level Festival that felt so…so comfortable. We wish the organizers a bit of luck with the increased logistics and send them this important note about remembering who got them there. The initial artist announcement comes November 8th, while tickets go on sale the following week.

What say you? Like the change? Bigger means better? Vegoose redux? If you’re reading this post and you have an opinion, we want to hear it. Open up.

  1. After attending so many Phish festivals/shitshows I loved the intimacy of Langerado. Also, after each night of the festival I was able to walk to my hotel instead of doing the camping thing.

I will miss Markham Park, but I’ll reserve judgement until the lineup for Biggie Cypes is announced.

  2. It’s all about the lineup — if the lineup is above and beyond what it’s been in the past (and 2007’s was fantastic), then I’m on board. If the lineup doesn’t beget the move to a bigger, frankly more inconvenient spot, then I’m not sure it’ll spell a return trip to Florida. November 8th will be a big day, and not just because it’s a meaningless election day…

  3. This is the “Superfly Syndrome”. Getting too big for their own britches. They are going to fall flat on their faces

  4. Langerado has grown every year. I believe it has always been the goal of the organizers to one day reach the size they are shooting for this year. They have had some bad luck in the past trying to attain their ideal grounds but everything has always worked out. I feel that Langerado will continue to feel like a Mid-level festival but this time I hope they take out all the stops. If its go big or go home i’m def going big. The line-up will truly determine how this one plays out.

  5. no lineup can save you from the overhead of throwing a concert in the Everglade. its like playing Radio City Music Hall……NO ONE MAKES MONEY

  6. i actually think BC is a great fit for them. There is so much space at the site that they can grow it more year after year. They only need to put as much infrastructure as the ticket sales call for. There were no permanent facilities at Markham Park, so it is all about the same cost wise (depending on the deal they made with Chief Jim Billy for rent).

Plus, the reservation means even Federal Laws do not apply!! Should be VERY CHILL!!

I did like staying at a hotel instead of camping, but whatever. spring break in Fla sounds good to me!

  7. Ummmm….I know it is completely crazy….but could the move out there be because a certain band that played Big Cypress before is going to play the ‘Rado in 2008? Um…I’m just saying…I mean, it would be pretty pretty easy for a band to play a fest put on by someone else rather than gearing up the whole Phish machine for their own super gig. …hey, it could happen!

  8. Missed out on attending Big Cypress the first time around … was one of those fans @ the time with a shoe box full of tapes studying the compositions before the parents would let me take big trips away from NC to see shows. Waited in front of the TV @ grandma’s until like 4am until phish played Heavy Things. I remember predicting what song they were going to show everyone.

Always wonedered how many people were in their homes dancing in addition to the eighty thousand at the show. I know I was. Lol … my grandmother woke up b/c I had the TV full blast and was going nuts to see the boys rockin it. She did not say anything, just looked at me and went back to bed. A few days later she asked me if I had any Phish records she could listen to … she liked it !!! Also have been curious how many people were turned-on to the phish while at home that night. That show made many a post-hiatus ticket buyer for sure.

How do I feel about Langerado moving from Markham Park … mixed emotions. I have attended the past two festivals there and it had it’s good points along with the negatives.

Big question … Can ANY combination of bands do this venue Justice?

I am rooting for Gamehenge !!!

Little darling, the smiles returning to the faces
Little darling, it seems like years since it’s been here
    Here comes the sun,
Here comes the sun, and I say
    It’s all right.

    Much love,

  10. Langerado has always been one of the best and will remain that way. Festivals and camping just go together, staying in hotels and driving in everyday sucks plain and simple. If you don’t like to camp and wanna complain about heat or being dirty you shouldn’t be at a festival in the first place. It’s about having as much as you can without the worry of having to leave every night. Plus now there is late night sets on site, come on how can you go wrong. This fest will be better than Bonnaroo.

  12. I’m definately in support of the move th BC. Yes, it’s been great being a part of a small festi, as it grows up. That’s exactly what the boys are doing, and I actually couldn’t be happier. Well, actually, i will be truely out of my mind extatic if we get a really nice surprise when the lineup is phinally announced! Either way, looking forward to dancin out there in the glades!
