HT Giveaway: JamCam Wanee DVD

Excuse the passive voice, but it’s best to say this plainly: The Allman Brothers Band is a much better group since the filming of their last concert DVD in 2003. We’ve been chomping at the bit for a recent show to make its way down the pike, and the waiting’s now over, thanks to JamCam Chronicles.

The nearly three-hour JamCam Episode 14: Wanee 2007 (click here for trailer) contains gorgeous footage of highlights from the rock-blues legends’ sets, as well as scorchers from their friends and family including Keller Williams, Rusted Root and The Radiators. We can’t think of a better stocking stuffer (besides Northern BBQ) for the Southern Rock fans in your life.

Episode 14 comes hot on the heels of JamCam’s 2-DVD set from JamCruise 5, their best release yet. The Wanee Episode marks the first time the Allman’s versions of Who To Believe and Good Morning Little Schoolgirl appear on DVD. Other standout tracks on the DVD include Oteil and the Peacemakers’ Thank You > Church Groove and a pair of full-length, Louisana-red-hot numbers from The Radiators. Bonus features include interviews with Allman spawns Devon Allman and Vaylor Trucks, as well as clips giving you a taste of what the Wanee Festival was all about.

  1. Melissa is our favorite song. My wife and I named our third daughter after that song. We took her to see the Allmans and they performed the song, a big thrill for our family!

  2. Back Where It All Begins.

April 22, 1995. Palace Theater, Louisville. Last row (literally) of the upper balcony. I will never forget watching Dickie just *slaughter* it. Thought the jam would never end. One of the best nights of my life.

  3. Blue Sky (Live version from An Evening with ABB – First Set)

I can hear it anyday, anytime of the year and in pretty much any situation and it brings a smile to my face. I made sure it was played at our wedding and it continues to be one of our songs.

  4. Mountain Jam – b/c there’s nothing like finding this on a bar jukebox and letting the good times roll… for 35 min!!!

  5. One Way Out is my favorite Allman Brothers Band song due to its infectious and unmistakeable groove that penetrates my soul!

  6. Blue Sky, because there is no better song to put you in a good mood. It might be rainy outside, but Blue Sky makes it all better.

  7. Dreams – September 19, 1971 SUNY Stoneybrook, NY

Not only is this the best Allman Brothers song, this is their best performance. Gregg sings with a pathos that perfectly compliments the impassioned slide work of the Duane. 19 minutes and 37 seconds of pure gut-wrenching blues.

  8. JESSICA – well it’s my wifes name but thats not why. I met the Allman Brothers before I met that HO(Just kidding). Simply, it is bc the song encompasses everything good about music. Jamming, Jamming and yes, More Jamming. Yes there are no lyrics, but boy when these guys play the shit out of it, wow – pure bliss.

  9. Jessica – one of the greatest instrumentals ever produced and one of the best cover songs that Umphrey’s has ever pulled off.

  10. My favorite Allman Brother song is Blue Sky. On 9/28/2004, Warren and Derek finally delivered their version. Though they were recreating the original album, their sound signature was unique. It added another chapter to this beautiful piece of music. One of rocks timeless classics! God Bless the Brothers.

  11. Midnight Rider – It’s a great soundtrack for traveling. Everytime I travel I want to hear this song as the sun comes up and it’s a great song to listen to on the road.

  12. “Whipping Post”. One of the most intense songs ever performed, and it just keeps getting more intense as the years go on and the band changes. The lyrics are mature, the bass is riveting, the drums drive and the guitar players always reach a creative peak.

  13. I love the song “Happily Married Man”. It’s the ultimate divorced bachelor’s anthem. When he gets tired he just lies down and sleeps wherever he is. The reason he is so happily married is that he hasn’t seen his wife in two or three years!

  14. It would have to be mountain jam 3-13-71.duane
and dickeys playing is like a hand in a glove.
also duanes solo at the end brings me to tears
everytime i hear it. wail on skydog.

  15. Statesboro Blues because its the song that got me into the ABB. Duanes Slide playing just makes your jaw drop everytime you hear it just unbeliveable playing. You can tell everyones in the pocket berrys playing his butt off the drummers are perfectly in synch gregg singing like theres no tomorrow dickey playing some sweet rythm. Its the song i want played at my funeral

  16. I’ve always been a Huge fan of the Allmans classics that blowup at their shows like Elizabeth Reed, One Way Out and Whipping Post to name a few. But the song I thought of first was Little Martha. An acoustic instrumental that highlights Duane’s harmonics, and ended many an allmans concert as we strode out together sporting smiles from ear to ear.

Here’s a couple sweet youtube version for your viewing pleasure.

  17. Blue Sky. Although it was written after the death of Duane Allman, it still is my favorite. The song has meaningful lyrics that I feel were a direct correlation with Dickey’s sorrow of death of Duane. Play Blue Sky in the morning and you start your day off right.

  18. I grew up listening to ABB, I love every song they played but my favorite has always been In Memory of Elizabeth Reed. It combined the great writing style of Dickey, and was a great chord progression for Duane to play a solo over.

  19. One way out. My father turned me onto the Allman Brothers and I have listened to them ever since. I named my daughter Jessica, but my favorite song is mountain jam, because the complex jamming of ABB is why I listen to them.

  20. 3-13-71 Mountain Jam
I’ll never forget where I was or what I was doing when I first heard Duane’s solo. I have still yet to hear a single piece of music with the amount of raw emotion that he conveys here. An open window to the man’s soul.

  21. Jessica – it doesnt have words because it doesnt need them – it evokes various emotions, especially happiness – so much so I named my dog after this song, but he’s a boy, so we named him Jesse.

  22. It’s not possible to describe “the best” Allman Bros. song in 50 words or less, although any song on their Fillmore East album would be a good startimg point.

  23. Every year since I was 17, I have seen the Allman Bro’s either play Upstate NY or NYC. LIfe is hard in between those shows, which is why “Whipping Post” has meaning. It has old country-western lyrics, deep southern blues and a timeless message of “everyone has it tough”…

  24. You Don’t Love Me-Fillmore The definition of “hittin’ the note”. The power and emotion of the guitar solos and Gregg’s voice and organ, Berry’s incredible bass lines, Butch and Jaimoe of one mind. This song is the best example of each brother playing their absolute best.

  25. Dreams. My Dad made me listen to this tune constantly since I was 8 years old. It’s imprinted in my DNA.

  26. A trip to visit my hippy uncle in New Orleans as a kid in 1971 led me to the Fillmore East album, and the music blew my mind. However, the beautiful instrumental “Jessica” from the 1973 Brothers and Sisters album inspires me and lifts my spirit the most.

  27. Whipping Post – like you’ve been tied to it is how you feel after you listen to the Fillmore East version on some good speakers and strong mushrooms…

  28. I met the love of my life after he played “One Way Out” with his band at a party at my house. I knew he was the one when his guitar spoke to my heart. He’s still playing and I’m still dancing 16 years later.

  29. “Statesboro Blues” has a special place in my heart. It was the first song I ever heard Duane play and the first song I heard in Nov. ’71 at Carnegie Hall, the dramatic NYC return of the band less than a month after his passing. The Road Goes On Forever!!

  30. I remember the first time i heard Jessica. I was in the backseat of my dad’s station wagon and i said, “DAD! Who is this?”
    “The Allman Brothers”
“Do you know the name of the song?”
    “Um, no.”
    “Thanks a lot, Dad.”
    “You’re adopted.”
and I’ve loved Jessica since that day!

  31. Blue Sky, from the SUNY show in 71. Written about a girlfriend of Dickey’s. The first recorded version of this song that I know of.Pure playing magic with Duane and Dickey.

  32. In memory of Elizabeth Reed was the song I played over and over when my sister (Elizabeth) died. The music spoke to my soul in atime of darkness and gave me some light. I fell in love with them when I saw the bros in 71. They changed my musical tastes and my life forever.

  33. The best track has got to be “Whipping Post”. Talk about raw emotion! “Good lord I feel like I’m dying!”

  34. Who To Believe is great music i love it can’t get any better than this. This is music from my life it is imprinted to stay.
