Stormy Mondays: In The Mood(y)

This week’s Stormy Monday is a mix of music suitable for the season: warm,  with a large dash of moody. Hendrix opens with The New Rising Sun, an unreleased track from 1995’s Voodoo Soup, which unbelievably is out of print at the moment. It’s every bit as good as its name, and drops right into the third live performance of Farmhouse from Fall tour in 1997.

The heart of the mix is a run from Brian Blade to JJ Grey and Mofro back to Brian Blade. I’ve plugged the drummer extraordinaire before, but usually as Wayne Shorter’s dummer. Here, his own Fellowship Band gives us the beautifully intoxicating Stoner Hill from this spring’s Season of Changes album, a must hear recording that is being praised as a rejuvenating force in jazz. She Don’t Know is off of Mofro’s recent Orange Blossoms, a great album full of clever soul songs, much less angry than last year’s Country Ghetto. Also from Season of Changes comes the stunning pair of Most Precious One > Most Precious One (Prodigy)– amazing playing, especially from guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel.

We finish out this week’s mix with The Mother Hips, Northern Cali’s own Americana rockers, covering Neil Young’s Cowgirl in the Sand at an ’05 show when they played Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere in its entirety. This week’s Stormy Mondays’ mix provides just the right soundtrack for a long weekend of apple cider, changing leaves and carving pumpkins. Enjoy!
