  2. They had a big inflatable pig they blew up during “Pigs” at Mule last night. They didn’t hoist it up in the air due to the logistics of the venue, but they shone the spotlight on it and everybody knew what the deal was.

  4. Phil show was so, so. Thought the first set was great, second set was kind of mediocre. Frankenstein and Gimme Shelter were definitely the standouts in the second set.

  5. Umphrey’s was the heat. The costumes were absolutely hilarious. Some others in the crowd dressed the part well (SpongeBob Marley, Larry Big Bird, etc.). The “Thriller” mashup was totally wild.

  6. Mule show was indeed a killer, and the aforementioned pig was certainly conspicuous, if it never did get off the ground. A really fun and ambitious show all around; having Ron Holloway and the girls there was a nice touch, Matt Abts singing lead on “Have a Cigar” was pretty wild, Warren and Danny really let their psychedelic rock joneses take over, and Jorgen is a terrific bass player—somewhere between Andy and Woody on the heaviness scale but overall like neither of his predecessors. The Floyd set is obviously the discussion, but the first set “Trane” went all over the place for about 15 minutes, and the “St. Stephen” double-time jam at the end of it had the place going nuts. “Kind of Bird” was also AWESOME to hear; the song selection in the first set had a really old school Mule vibe about it. Encore was a little lackluster, but it was curfew-related: they had to cut “Blind Man” short and Ron Holloway wasn’t sure if he should come on for it at all until he kinda did an outtro thing with the band. Awesome show, though. – CB

  7. Also, here’s the accurate Mule 2nd set:

    One of These Days >
    Fearless >
Pigs On the Wing Pt. 2 >
Shine On You Crazy Diamond >
    Have a Cigar >
    Speak to Me >
    Breathe >
    On the Run >
    Time >
The Great Gig In the Sky >
    Money >
    Comfortably Numb >
Shine On You Crazy Diamond >
    Wish You Were Here

  8. Phil was terrible from my perspective. The band seemed directionless, as if they had never played together before. Both sets were filled with mistakes & miscues that at times bordered on train wrecks. Jackie tried to trade off vocal lines in the coda of Casey Jones with Theresa, but she didn’t catch on, and they ended up dropping lines & getting lost. On the other hand, Next Time & Mason’s were both good versions although Phil, Jackie & Theresa all sang different lines unintentionally in the last verse of Mason’s.

Second set was about as exciting as watching a balloon slowly deflate. What ever Phil was reading during the spacey intro was inaudible, & I was 15′ away from the right stack. Boris the Spider came across as mediocre, & Frankenstein didn’t “get there”. Everything between Cryptical & St. Stephen should have been crossed off the set list. I would trade a night in hell for never having to sit through What’s Become of the Baby again. That whole run just sucked the energy out of the room.

Stephen provided a ray of light but at that point in the night, it felt like watching the GD in ’95, just hoping they wouldn’t fuck up (See New Speedway from Highgate as a dismal, cringe inducing example.) And true to form they did, coming in early after the bridge, despite Molo’s valiant attempt to direct them from behind the kit. “One more time, one more time!”

The highlight for me was singing Sweet Home Alabama with Monica over the bands tepid reading of Werewolves. After that show a Donor Rap>Space>Donor Rap encore would have been an improvement. The worst part is, after last year’s smoking Halloween Phil show, I went in with high expectations. Oh well, should have gone to Ryan Adams.

    Sweet Blaugh…

  9. I like Phil playing Frankenstein but… He could have done a Help > Slip > Frankenstein or Feels Like A Frankenstein.

  10. Gotta agreed that What’s Become Of My Baby completely sucked the life out of the room, it was a complete bore that just dragged on and on. Made me contemplate ducking out early since at that point I had kind of give up on that set.

Luckily the Gimmee Shelter kind of saved things from being a total disaster. You could hear Theresa’s vocals the entire night until then.
